Kitchen renovation ideas and inspiration

Also, with Ikea drawers, you don't get white interiors. It's a plastic or some kinda greyish sprayed metal? No sides on the drawers, just little bars.

Like this, right?

I am picturing that in my place down here. In under a year it would all be covered in rust. In two years the bars would be completely rusted through and the drawer would come apart when you tried to open it.

umm, MoFo, that's called "blum interiors" which kick the shit out of wood any day.

$100,000+ scavolini kitchens also use blum.

as for cost, that size kitchen you put in at ikea would've been 1/4 the price probably (well, it depends on the granite etc) but your kitchen is tiny compared to this one, therefore I've gott asave where I can and splurge where I can.

referring people is never easy - you refer, if it works out, great, if not, it's not YOUR company so you should just say caveat empor or whatever the saying is.

Ionno. In the store, the Ikea ones look all scratched up and ugly. I really hate that fake plasticy metal look. Looks like Ikea furniture legs. To each their own.

When I went to Ikea, they quoted me 10K not including labour so. Home Depot said 25K. I was like "uuuuuuuuuh, you're kidding." lol

Looks vs functionality I guess, but like you said, "to each their own".

Yeah, Home Dumpo is a JOKE for contracting services.

Yeah, I didn't feel like I was getting knowledgeable service. I mean, I was ready and willing to go for it if they had tried to sell me some stuff. Like tell me about products and stuff. I gave you all this info and I get nothing. A lot of high expectations since they have that little office area with all the samples. But kinda thought they didn't know what they were talking about. I went to 2 of them too. But they just gave me a package and told me it was 25K in the end. Mom and pop shops still rule.

Alex, for a tropical climate, it would be amazing if you did a rustic painterly classic Italian style kitchen like they have in villas.

The villa I stayed at when I was in Lucca had a dream kitchen. Lots of cast iron, white, black and blue tile, gold finishes, fresco and patina. It was just gorgeous and rather simple but ornate at the same time if that makes sense.

Oh and don't you think the IKEA display would totally be used up and scratched?

I've seen blum hardware in a few custom kitchens (private homes) and the stuff is solid as a rock.

If I had a million bucks I'd go with bulthaup.

Speaking of, the horizontal grain is now my favorite.

funny MoFo, we posted totally opposite styles BUT I love that style as well - all depending on the space of course.

Speaking of Ikea cabinets...has anyone here used them and had them hacked to look custom? I'm planning my fairly large kitchen reno right now and I'm planning to use Ikea Adel cabinets to save some moolah and then splurge on the counters, custom island and other things.

Would love to hear some experiences.

I think I brought this up in the other thread. Semihandmade doors make custom doors for Ikea cabs. The look is amazing. I'm sure you could find a local millworker to do the same. Think how easy it'll be for them re: dimensions. Just bring the old shit.

I'd say on houzz.com you'll find a lot more valuable input than the one-off here. Check out that site, too.

In general I'm doing the same thing, I'm painting the bottoms (spraying) and getting custom doors done for the wall unit.

How big is your kitchen?
Post about it on a blog perhaps?

Yeah. I personally would never do that for my own kitchen as I like cold and hard. But yeah, I like rustic Italian kitchens very much. Fun to eat in. The one I spent a lot of time in had amazing black and white checkered floors and beautiful marble counter tops that we had to ensure no citrus touched when we did our kitchen shift. I loved the giant barn sinks and the curled faucets with an industrial feel. But it was a nightmare to clean. It works for a place with lots of sunshine and warm weather but it would just get really gross and moldy in Toronto. It would totally work in South Africa though.

I also love breakfast banquettes. That's my dream some day. Staring at my doctor husband over eggs and the paper.

I wasn't sure which one to do. I think I would've been happy with either but yeah, I was looking to try something different as my natural choice was to make the grain go horizontal with the pulls.

That's the kinda wall I wanna do something day though for sure on the other side. A big ol' storage wall with a second oven and counter depth fridge. Or I'm just gonna move.

Alex, take photos of your kitchen now!
