WOW
i don't know what else to say about King Sunshine. It was my first time seeing them live, though i had heard great things about them.
i got there around 11:30 pm or so, just in time to catch Deeno from Guelph laying out a beautiful, deep house set as warm up for the band.
the space used fo this event was an art gallery, and the layout was phenomenal. nice big, lofty room, seperate chill out area's, comfy cushions and couches all over the place to relac on, free fruit available all night long, and the art that was on display was beautiful
the energy in the room was rising for the last 20 minutes or so of Deeno's set before the band came on. once they started playing, everything just went OFF THE HOOK. the space was rammed with people from all walks of life, and everyone was getting their collective groove on, as well everyone having a huge smile on their faces all night long.
after the first set, Deeno came back on and then kicked me in the ass with even more deep, funky, groovin house. it's too bad the tables kept on skipping on him in this set, cause the track selection was otherwordly. damn that boy has some programming skills!
the band then came back on for a second 1 hr or so set, and then they just got even deeper, funkier, and dirtier than the first set, all to the same results with the crowd. we loved them!
by the time King Sunshine was done, i was exhausted from almost 4 hours of dancing, so i decided to leave. and that was with over half the dj line up, including the Dukes, yet to play!
i', sure i missed out on more goodness, but the smile that i had in my soul when i left after the band more than made up for what i could have missed.
THE BEST jam i have ever been witness to. I am now a convert to King Sunshine, the best live house collective i have ever seen.
(oh as for the music they played, it was a mix of jazzy, latin, tribal, acid, pure deep funk. and all played with attitude...DAMN!)
from what i gather they have been added to the line up at KoolHaus for Mark Farina'a party in may, and i will pay the money just to see them again.
peace
