King Arhthur and the Knights of the Round Table

After a recent stint of watching Excalibur,The Mists of Avalon, First Knight and other cherished Arthurian Legends I've completely rediscovered my passion for this Celtic mythology. (or historically based legend depending on who you talk too)

A romanticized era of chilvary and adventure. Of good versus evil, of magic and mystery. Dragons and knights in shining armour.

We had Sir Lancelot, the dashing night, the father of the 'True Prince' Sir Galahad and Arthur's best friend. Tortured by his love for his best friend's wife.

The lady Guinevere, who's beauty would rip the foundations of a nation apart, and turn peace to war.

The mysterious magician Merlin, adviser to Arthur and wise in the ways of the ancient ones

Morgan Le Fay - Arthur's sister who bears him a son, is she a changelling or just a human versed in the Arts?

The Lady of the Lake, the guarder of Avalon, and the protector of the Ancient Ways.

This stuff is amazing. Movies like Excalibur, First Knight, The Mists of Avalon Have spawned some incredible imaginations. The only books I've read of Arthurian legend lately is the Mists of Avalon, but that is incredibly unique because it is told from a woman's perspective.

Any recommendations for more arthurian lore? Opinions on King Arthur? Was he real or not? Other mythology you love?

I recently saw a show on arthurian legend on discovery, it was an archaelogical hunt for physical evidence of his existence. Like all shows of it's type, no conclusions could be drawn

I recently read a sci-fi short called The Last Defender of Camelot, a modern-day extension to the original story. In it, Merlin has been cast under a spell that makes him sleep for a thousand years; his final enchantment was to give Launcelot extended life so that he, the greatest champion of his day, would be around when Merlin woke up. Launcelot also meets Morgana le Fay, who is also still alive and working as a palm reader. She tells him that the fabled Holy Grail was in fact an enchantment of Merlins, cast to hold the collapsing brotherhood together and give them a new purpose.

Interesting - its in a collection of short stories called Science Fiction Masterpieces, compiled by Issac Asimov.

I read Le Morte D'Arthur for school. It's the original King Arthur tales by Mallory. Not really that good - unless you love shit like:

"And Lancelot smote him on his helm, whence forth he rode of and smot the white hart....smote smote smote"

Lots of smoting....

back to the topic at hand....

Allie, there is a series by a man named Jack Whyte called The Dream of Eagles ...there are like 6 books in the series, i've only read the first few. but they are really good.

it is a look at the arthurian legend from a historical fiction perspective. basically he crafts a tale of roman legionaries who settle in the south of england as the roman empire begins to contract and found the city of Camulod. the tale starts with the grandfather of the man who eventually became Uther the high king but focuses greatly on the character of Merlin.

the series is less magical then some, but i truly loved it.

ps having read it ruined the movie gladiator for me bacause of the terrible anachronistic weaponary they used in that movie.
