I really enjoyed Ken Ishii's set, but what's up with the scary security guys? They were freaking out in the flooded women's bathroom and being generally uncool. Too bad the sound system seemed to have some problems, but overall a good time for sure!

it was stupid turntables that were loose, and shaky tables.

Was a fun fun night...got on guestlist thanks to my roommate and had a blast!

Met a few TBK people...hey Laura, did you ever figure out how to kick step?!? LOL Ken Ishii was amazing, danced my ass off and had a great time...I liked SOS...at first I was really dissapointed that it was at Tropicana..until I realised it was the second floor...and except for the flooded washroom, everything was really nice...

Ken Ishii's set was fuckin amazing. Danced like there was no tomorrow. Funky, with some breaks in the begining, and lots of hard bangin techno. NICE.... Too bad it ended so early. Was still too pumped to go home, so we hit system after. NE ways. Good party, but no one was dancing in the begining. It wasn't until half an hour into Ishii's set that it seemed the crowd finally started moving. Overall a wicked night.

yes - i was surprised both times i've been to SOS - they just have normal fold up tables for a "dj booth" with no padding or insulation for the decks - the problem with those tables is they have no resistance to vibrations, and are far too low for most dj's ... you'd think that a club that would invest heavy $$$ in sound and decor would pay a little more attention to the engine running the show -&gt; the dj booth.

there is nothing more frustrating than playing on decks that skip!

great to see the usual TBK techno posse in full effect and great to finally meet HMHA

i have to say i really liked what they did with the projections - very wabi-esque

and ken ishii was great - that 3 table action with the 2 mixers 15 feet apart was quite a spectacle

In defense of Adam Marshall and Lotus, I think the sound behind the decks played a major factor in their difficulties. Apparently there was a bit of a delay in the sound coming out of the monitors. This made mixes that were actually on, sound off to the djs behind the booth.

During their set, I heard a number of people yell, "you suck" and comments of that variety. I realize that dealing with these problems is part of being a dj. However, at the same time I think audiences should acknowledge the circumstances and base their judgements accordingly.

Why do people repeatedly seem to think they can get away without this simple concession to a hitch-free dj performance? Unless the booth consists of a steel frame bolted to a concrete floor or something, these, or some similar vibration-damping mechanism, are an essential and inexpensive (considering the price of booking, say, Ken Ishii par example) committment to a quality show that really goes off. ESPECIALLY at a venue like Tropicana where the floors are practically on springs!

Oh, and ear-splitting, hyper-treble-charged monitors that you can't adjust? Those are a no-no as well. There is in fact a REASON that most professional-quality mixers have a separate "Booth Level" knob on them.

To be fair to the promoters of the show, I have to say that it's an unenviable task to properly set up a 6-table, 2-mixer system, and get it right first try. I guess they didn't have a lot of time in which to set it up either, because they were still doing sound check for the first half hour of our set, and they were still having problems by the time we actually did start. I'm sure if they'd been able to, they'd have had everything checked and ready by like 8pm or so. That's what I'd have aimed for...a nice hour or two buffer before the party is scheduled to start, in case the world explodes. Sound guys ofen have methods of dealing with that, if given enough time.

Kudos to Ken Ishii though. Professional that he is, he kept a positive attitude, kept on smiling, and just shook his head at all of the problems, even when the tables would skip like mad EVERY time he managed to get the crowd jumping.

Which is more than I can say for my own attitude that night. Sorry for being such a whiny bitch guys.

it was a pleasure to see/hear ken ishii dispite the technical difficulties. he wanted to let loose on us but was being held back by the system problems. yet he still managed to move the dancefloor with his 3 table madness.

i enjoyed the visuals and overall the set up was good. although, the place could use a little more air. *hot*

good to meet tommysmalls and kumi along with the rest of the tech heads.

It was a good night.
There was lots of good techno.
There were a few technical problems.
It was hot.
I danced.

I didn't know what to expect from Soul on Spadina, having only been to the upper floors of Tropicana before. Nice and cool, upscale type of place, I was releived and pleased.
I arrived late and missed most of those who went on at the beggining. Dance floor was small-ish, but I found myself a spot and danced, unlike most of the other people there at the start.
It got really crowded once Ishii got on the decks - not much room to move. He played a great selection of tunes and I was loving it. The mixing wasn't the best at times, but now I understand why with the table movement and other problems.
The place cleared out quite a bit, even before Ishii finished, leaving more room to dance. I didn't stay long afterwards either- my feet hurt (someone remind me not to try and wear different shoes than ususal), not being able to dance the way I want just pisses me off.

Good to see all the regular tech-head bunch out to support. As well as ones I haven't seen in a long time.
Nice to meet some new peeps too - hey Simon.

All in all it was a good night. Just as people said... the floor is way to bouncy. The tables that he played on were crappy and the monitors were on the floor causing the records to skip. Somehow they managed to fix the situation. Too me...it seemed that the tables were to close to the edge of the stage. His techno was a different kinda techno...um...definately smooth and bumpin'. He impressed me with his ability to mix one record....travel 3 decks away and drop the needle on the other.

The venue though would have been better in a real nightclub as opposed to SOS. The tables and chairs got in the way.

Highlight of the night!! Ken...you brought the techno luvin' ladies as well! Such beautiful asian women bumpin' to da beat!
