We are looking for a Unix Architect in either a contractor or
permanent capacity to join our Research and Development team. If you

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be a highly experienced IT professional
with proven experience in systems development, platform and
application architecture, as well as developing and fostering
excellent working relationships in a fast-paced environment.

As a member of the InQuent Technologies Research and Development team,
you will be key in building and implementing new system architectures,
assisting in new vendor/technology and customer environment
evaluations, audits and migrations, as well as working on major
software and hardware project initiatives with our Operations team.

Responsibilities:

• Build and test new features for InQuent's hosting environment, both
software and hardware platform, as part of InQuent's release schedule.
• Help maintain InQuent's internal UNIX systems, such as email, DNS,
backups and service level reporting
• Develop (build, test, release) new platform architectures based on
InQuent's IQOS and Blade technology platforms
• Build and assist in new customer migrations into the InQuent
environment
• Provide support for large server environment maintaining system
standardization, security, software, and performance.
• Act as a 24/7 on-call escalation point for any Level 5
(architectural) issues from InQuent's Operations team


The successful candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:

• Proficient Linux (all variants) skills, both operating system and
common third party applications
• Computer Science (or equivalent) degree or equivalent (3+ years)
experience a plus.
• Proficient Solaris (5+) skills, operating system, hardware and third
party applications
• Proficient hardware knowledge of Sun, Compaq, and HP servers.
• Exposure to Network Appliance filers, Raidzone NAS, Cisco load
balancers, and switches.
• Excellent shell scripting skills (tcsh,sh,bash); exposure to
customer audits an asset
• Excellent perl coding skills. Experience interacting with LDAP/DBI a
plus.
• Very good knowledge of Java and PHP programming languages and Object
Oriented principles is considered a plus
• Exposure to HP hardware, such as the Proliant series
• Experience with automated deployment technologies, such as Norton
Ghost, jumpstart and PXE network booting
• Adept knowledge of system security, locking down OS, user
permissions, patching servers, and staying up-to-date on all security
issues.
• Proficient with services such as HTTP (Apache), LDAP, DNS, Qmail,
NFS v2/v3, MySQL, PostgreSQL
• Working knowledge with the Software Development Lifecycle phases,
including Requirement Analysis/Gathering, Design, Build,
Implementation, Testing and Maintenance.
• Sun Solaris or Red Hat Linux Certification an asset

This is the bit that scares me. Does this mean giving up any vacation that leaves cell-phones behind, or ever getting properly fucked up?

obviously vacations are vacations and you don't need to take a phone.

ps- this particular position's escalations are basically non existent. ie: you might answer the phone once a month.
