Does anyone know of any jazz forums?

The more "new jazz", the better, the more local the better.

My stepdad is obsessed with jazz. When I was in high school he used to get up at 6:30 in the morning and play "new jazz" at full blast.

I am scarred for life.

Is new jazz like new country? Cuz if it is I don't want anything to do with it. I like the original just fine thank you.

Me and my little brother call it 'evil jazz'.

And we yell 'TURN OFF THE EVIL JAZZ!!' at my stepdad whenever he dares to assault us with it.

God, that awful new-age smooth jazz. Shoot me in the face.

It's probably as insulting to call that jazz as it is to call Shania Twain new country to proper old school country singers.

i used to hate on jazz bigtime (mostly cuz i didn't know anything, and that's the way i operate...haha)

but now i'm into a lot of it. none of that diana krall pap...or even big band/swing shit...but some coltrane (specifically "inchworm"), medeski, martin and wood, and a lot of the new new york stuff is fucking amazing.

zorn rules too...

Big band is the fucking shit.

Throw it on and it will get anyone not dressed in fubu dancing like a champ.

Having a whole goddam trumpet section all of a sudden pick up the rythm with a sudden blast into the song just fucks shit up.

i don't like hokey swing beats...to me, they sound kinda cheddarific...but then again...i am new to this...

i'm definitely into the more experimental, farthest-reaches stuff.

Just for the record - big band is not swing music.

It's jazz and dance music played by...big bands.

Any type of jazz can be played with a big band - it gives any song more depth.

Now swing itself was mainly done by big bands. However, not all big band music is swing. Not even close.

medeski!!!

i also like bill frisell's nashville stuff...really pretty guitar work.

and my partner in crime is in this improvisational guitar trio called "the three blind moils"...they just got featured in glen hall's improvisers festival and they played at the dillistillery jazz festival in the experimental room.

they're fucking awesome. impressionistic, dynamic, instantiations of sonic vox.

Mercy, I'll introduce you to my stepdad, and I'll keep the two of you as FAR AWAY FROM THE STEREO AS POSSIBLE FOREVERMORE.

I think of new jazz as that crazy intense squeaky experimental stuff.

It makes me want to jab a steak knife in my eyeballs. I've heard WAY too much of it for one life.

There are some great tunes though!
What about John Coltrane?

John Coltrane is not the squeaky obnoxious stuff I'm talking about.

I just listened to Central Park West. Beautiful.
