Just got home. I had yet another wicked night at breath Friday's at System.

Got there around midnight while Scaife was playing. He has really improved a lot in the past year. Played yet another solid set.

Now Jimmy Van M on the other hand... well... he blew my fucking mind! This was the first time I had been able to see him live, and he was everything I expected and more. I would have to say that was one of my favorites if not my favorite set so far at breath. I'm surprised there weren't more people there, but I did like having room to dance.

Right after Jimmy, Deko-ze stepped up. What can I say... he blew me away to! He's so full of energy. He's definately my favorite local DJ.

and to Mike Greco, thanks for the drink tickets! They were put to good use.

excellent night once again...brought along some friends to their first breathe friday, including a good friend from nyc who was totally impressed with the layout & of course the incredible tunes of jimmy van m...good to see ilia, & mark again (my apologies for interrupting during the buildup in bon voyage
smile.gif
) & of course the wabi guys...i totally said some bad things a few months ago on the GU board about Jimmy Van M (pertaining to his trance nation america disc), but he won me over last night with an incredible display of mixing, tunes & programming...i'm sure most of you are tired from the double dose of parties so far this weekend & i have to go switch my dancing shoes for bowling shoes now (big brothers fundraiser)...deko-ze again played a nice slammin set to finish of the night (at least my night at about 6)...

breathe once again, keep up the great work & to everyone else have an excellent saturday...

Van M played a great set. His mixing and programming was good (for a DJ set). However, I think he still needs more practice at reading a crowd to pull off a great 'headlining' set. About an hour into it, System was thinning out pretty quickly. Those that stayed were treated to good music though (as I said, I did enjoy Van M's sound)

Then Deko-ze came on and kicked it up a notch (and the crowd was soooo ready for it

) I hear him there every Friday and this week I recognized maybe 8 tracks tops! Deko-ze where the hell did you find those puppies? Wicked, wicked set... ending off with The Orb's 'Little Fluffy Clouds' (nice touch)

Don't forget, he didn't go on until 2. The place usually empty's out a bit around 3 anyway.

What can I say...
Jimmy Van M threw down such a great set on Friday night... Really long melodic mixes and amzing tracks (didn't anyone recognise any of them?)
Must mention the excellent set by Sari in the back room -really a great build up before Van M. Everytime I go to System the back room gets better and better.
Wanted to stay and dance when Deko-ze took hold of the decks.. but was still tired from Thursday night.
Great to see you all there - djcheezewhiz, crouse, stinkyb, coleridge, gizmo, flea, libradragon, and everyone else i forget...
See you guys next week for Breeder.

Where you been Dazed? Since Deko-ze has been closing, the nights at System have consistently gone well past 6:00 AM. While there typically is some turnover between 3:00 - 4:00 AM, the night has been holding steady from then on.

Van M impressed with his technical ability. But he played a set appropriate for building up the night, getting people ready to go home with a smile on their face, or even better - listening to it on a beach with a Margarita in hand. He did not however, play a set appropriate to a peak timeslot position. A few deep progressive elitists might disagree. But guess what? Most of you elitists never pay to get in at System. Its the people that all left at 3:00 AM (and there were alot of them on Friday) that were bored that pay the bills and you have to keep them happy as well, to keep a night going in the long run. Any club owner or promoter who has been doing this longer than a year knows that!!!

That's what I was referring to. It seemed a bit more noticable this past friday though.

Anyway, I had a great time, and Jimmy Van M kicked my frickin' ass!

Some of us ELITIST came out to support the back room with Sari from Montreal who threw down the fat, fat Montreal-style sound. Very nice.

This ELITIST in particular was very sick and had to jet at 2:30am as all us 'ELITIST ' do because we are just there to be seen.

Maybe next time I'll be more like you cause you sound like someone cool I'd like to hang out with. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahaa!

Im too ELITIST for you tho!

to put it plainly- he was good. not incredible, but his style is subtle and effective. he had the tempo down really low which is cool if it works with the tracks- but when he spun the quivver track on gu019 (d2) it just sounded kinda lazy. to me his style seems more suited to warming up for someone else!

i thought he came on a bit later (2:00) and there wasn't much of a crowd there. i felt a bit embarassed for the city, actually- the second time he's been here to a mediocre crowd (this and the set at roxy in sept.). i suppose the warm up for digweed went well last year, but whatever.

i ran out of steam at 4 and had to leave- the night before took it's toll- but definitely worth it!

ah yes- sari was spinningsome amazing stuff in the back- definitely want to check him out when he comes back.

cheers

I'm not sure, but doesn't he frequently open for digweed?
