isoHunt shut down, Canadian torrent firm fined $110M US

The Canadian Press Posted: Oct 18, 2013

A Vancouver resident has agreed to shut down his popular downloading website and pay a $110-million fine after settling a long legal fight with the Motion Picture Association of America.

Gary Fung ran isohunt.com, a search engine for BitTorrent files, which helped users find virtually every type of copyrighted material, including music, movies, computer software, ebooks and pornography.

As of Friday, the site stated it linked to 13.7 million active BitTorrent files with 51 million users either uploading or download them.

According to Alexa.com, it ranked as the 423rd top site on the web for global traffic and 167th in Canada.

On his blog, Fung said he was "sad to see my baby go."

"But I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. Ten-and-a-half years of isoHunt has been a long journey by any business definition, and forever in internet startup time. It started as a programming hobby in my university days that has become so, so much more," Fung wrote.

"It's been a learning experience beyond what I imagined. I've done the best I could pushing the social benefits of BitTorrent and file sharing, the searching and sharing of culture itself, but it's time for me to move on to new software ideas and projects."

MPAA, which represents Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios and Warner Bros., originally launched its legal challenge of isoHunt in 2006.

It said in a statement that the settlement was "a major step forward in realizing the enormous potential of the internet as a platform for legitimate commerce and innovation."

From the website
Initiating Self Destruct

This is it. We are shutting down isoHunt services a little early. I'm told there was this Internet archival team that wants to make historical copy of our .torrent files, I'm honoured that people think our site is worthy of historical preservation. But the truth is about 95% of those .torrent files can be found off Google regardless and mostly have been indexed from other BitTorrent sites in the first place. So I might as well do a proper send-off to you dear isoHunt users, before final shutdown sequence on Tuesday. It's been an adventure in the last 10.5 years working on isoHunt, a privilege working with some of the smartest guys I've worked with, and my life won't be the same without this journey. For what I'm working on next, please look up my blog on Google and follow me there. Because as the Terminator would say with a German accent,

I'll be backkk.

Gary will be having his wages garnished for a long time I guess.

I wonder if his site actually made him any money? In the last few years it was nothing but pop unders, crappy self launching videos of Alicia Keys clones and other 'music' video artists I have never heard of before. I imagine without a pop up blocker activated, isohunt would have been a total nightmare to visit.

thats an insane amount to be fined for one person !

too bad, back in the day it was one of my go to sites.

Ever since Demonoid went down, i have essentially just used the nefarious and always present TPB !

there was that other one i used for a bit but they cared to much about Upload rate vs download rate and i give ZERO cares about that shite.

too bad so sad, hope they drop the amount of money he owes them to something reasonable and able to be paid off in a lifetime

isohunt wasn't worth using - always ended up @ TPB anyway

I think its prime time was 4 years ago - ended up getting a lot of junk on it and I was likely to get "trick" torrents and stuff that wasn't as advertised in recent years so when I go public its usually TPB and nothing else seems that great.

Did you clear your browser history? you could painfully keep going back and back until you find the cache version.

I guess you're not getting any invites for private sites now that you've outed yourself as leech who gives no fucks about ratios. :p
hahahaha i still BELONG to private sites, that have ratios, and my ratios are generally around the .8-1.1

but its to much fucking work to maintain that all the time. i like to sort my shit, and when sitting on TB's worth of data, i cant have just one central repository for everything if i want to have a hope in hell of finding something by browsing.

and maintaining those ratios essentially DOUBLES your bandwidth , and with my new flatmate who downloads more than i do, even our 300GB limit could be capped and eclipsed if we maintain a 1-1 ratio for everything we download....

and i guarantee you thats a HELL of a lot more thought and consideration that most people that download torrents gives.

Torrents? Hrm. Flash in the pan thing for me other than for actual linux isos.

It started with binaries/NGs...it'll end there for me too, once media comes out with legal options to meet my needs (that aren't prohibitively expensive).

So any other good sites out there that don't need an invite? ISohunt was good for hiphop mixtapes and for reasonably safe torrents.
