Interstella 5555 - a film by Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto

Those of you who have been watching the Daft Punk videos for their 2001 album Discovery were probably surprised by the anime element that was in all their videos.

It was actually parts from a complete film which was actually a musical. The film was scored to the Discovery album, telling a 65 minute animated feature, animated by the man who was responsible for Yamato (here known as Star Blazers) and Galaxy Express 999.

It's a pretty amazing DVD, well told story with no dialogue, just an animated story to accompany the music Daft Punk made. It also comes with an enhanced CD/remix album in the DVD packaging.

Speaking of anime, I just watched Ninja Scroll.

It was good (although there was no scroll to speak of).

I always thought that the animation in the video for one more time looked a lot like Galaxy Express 999.

Galaxy Express 999 for those who don't know is the most boring fucking Anime series ever. It's 200000 years of a flying train in space. I used to see it on the Sci-Fi channel, and I could never watch more than 20 mins without going nuts.

That was just Thomas Bangalter, one half of the duo. And he only did like three tracks for the film. He added one or two more from the his Roule back catalogue.

"Outrage" is a hype tune, though.

I have heard rumors of a new Daft Punk album. Hopefully they go back to the shit-tearing beats of homework.

As soon as I get a job i'll purchase that.

i agree that homework is a classic, and that it tears shit up.

but i have never begrudged daft punk for discovery.....it must be one of the most underrated electronic albums ever.

came out way before the electroclash movement started...it has tons of style (and styles)...great beats, intricate movements, good times, sing along moments, emotion, instruments, and a buzz that I can only get from this album.

put discovery on a banging system while getting your pre-drink on and your in for a good mood.

You're right! I probably have underrated the crappiness of that album. It's probably way more crappy then I give it credit for.

(I reeeeeeealllly hated Discovery, sorry.)

Leiji Matsumoto also did Danguard Ace.

Part of Force Five and one of my favorite childhood cartoons.
