Someone sent me this email and I thought I'd share it with you in case you're interested, In theory this could work and adjust price fixing....

The rumour is we are going to hit close to $1.00 a liter by the summer. Want
gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united
action. This idea makes much more sense than the "don't buy gas on a certain
day" campaign that was going around last year.

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we couldn't
continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an
inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. Whoever thought of
this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Read it and
think about it.

Right now gasoline priced at about $.65 is considered really
cheap. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us
to think the cost of a liter of gas is cheap at $.65-.75, we need to
take aggressive action to teach them the buyers control the
marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each
day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the
price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not
purchasing their gas!

And we can do it without hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our
cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we can have an impact on gas
prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, don't purchase any gasoline from
the two biggest companies, ESSO and PetroCanada. If they
are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If
they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of ESSO and
PetroCanada gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me
at
this point...keep reading and you'll see how simple it is to reach
millions of people!!

I am sending this to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at
least ten more, that's 300. If those 300 send it to at least ten more
that's 3000. By the time the message reaches the sixth
generation of people, we will have reached over three million consumers!

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each,
then 30 million people will have been contacted!

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten
more people within one day of receipt, all 30 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't
think you and I had that much potential, did you? Acting together we can
make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

This is pretty easy for me, I'm a Sunoco buyer... nothing like Ultra 94.

I've been doing this for more than a year now... I go for the Underdog.

I get this email one a week.

Gas prices here are $0.75 a litre.

And every holiday they go up.

That's why I get gas at Fast Gas.

The full service don't hurt either.....

90% of the gasoline price is determined before it reaches the retail outlet, half of that as taxation. There isn't much room for retailers to move on the pricing past that point, but they try to compete. The retail gasoline business runs at a lower profit margin than a convenience store, which is why they have them at gas-stations; to actually make some money. The taxation effect is anti-competitive, as only the integrated producers can weather the commodity ups and downs through managing their refinery inventories. It hurts consumers. Independents don't stand a chance, as they buy their gas from direct competitors. You don't see many in Canada. So when people complain about gasoline prices, what they're effectively complaining about is Canadian taxation policy. The boycott idea is uninformed.

Untrue Governments are more influenced by big business, if PC or Exxon was to complain it would result in A) taxation relief on the $ of Gas or B) direct relief to the corporation to compete.

I'm not saying it's a perfect idea and the selection is still there, buy gas from ma&pa stations, 7-11, sunoco or whatever.... the idea is to force one company to take issue with the price of gas to request relief. It would have to be a larger distributor so the impact would be greater, ESSO is the world's largest oil company, it would possibly take months to have an impact but eventually could work...

All of the small gas stations buy there gas from the big 3. So what good does it do, to buy from the small companies?

Did you know that esso is exxon?

and exxon spent millions of dollars researching a name(exxon) that meant nothing in any language in the world. Because esso means broken car in japanese(or something like that) and exxon is only called esso in Canada.

A) Why now?

B) Canada has so much god damn oil, why are still dependant on external sources??? :(

C) Ultra 94!? Wow...you either need that for your car or you got money to burn....lol....I would invest in octane boosters (ie. additives) before I continue to pay what they're asking for at the pumps for that!; it's saves huge money in the end.

Why does this suggestion always look to me like a bad joke??
Wtf is the point of circulating the same email round and round in a self-perpetuating pile of junk mail that I don't want back. Shouldn't it suggest actually emailing a central point where the email can actually do some good?? Like you local politician etc. etc.? At least is would actually be a start, because what they're suggesting above goes absolutely nowhere and accomplishes nothing but a bunch of emails.

My .02 cents...

well, sort of. 7-11 is one of the largest gasoline retailers in the North America, and uses it's pricing power and balance sheet to forward purchase and run an inventory, basically to give it some pricing leverage that the mom & pops can't match. Plus it's just as an addition to the profitable business inside the store.

Sunoco is the retail wing of Suncor, an integrated producer.

I generally disagree with you in your assesment of the influence of the oil and gas companies in North America, but that's cool. I think the boycott idea is silly, but if it results in shorter lines at the gas station, I'm all for it.

A principle example of the taxation effect is the disparity between what Candians pay at the pump, vs what Americans pay.

Esso is Imperial Oil

Exxon is ExxonMobil

they did come from the same place, however.

because chain emails virtually always ARE a bad joke.

the FIRST time someone thought up the idea, it was probably hilarious. i think it was the "i'm bill gates, help me test my beta email tracking system and microsoft will pay you 5 cents for every forward".

of course, it's always more reliable if it says "my friend karen did this and she just got a cheque for $6,780!!! for doing nothing!!! i know this sounds bogus but it really works!!! what have you got to lose anyway???"

btw, if you are reading this message, you must cut-and-paste it and forward it to 10 people on your email list. if you do, the girl or guy that you've had that secret crush on will ask you out. if not, youwill have a disfiguring accident and your mother will go to hell.
