Inception - Chris Nolan tops himself. Again.

Discussion in 'TRIBE Main Forum' started by el presidente Highsteppa, Jul 7, 2010.

  1. Imagine bastard lovechild of The Matrix & Casino Royale, with it being written by Charlie Kaufman as an action minded script writer. Add elements of Ocean's 11 and the Science of Sleep. The result is one extremely complicated, extremely good sci-fi mindfuck of a film.

I've been trying to hold my anticipation in check for this. Everything about it looks on the money (cast, plotline, style).

Everything is pointing to this being better than The Prestige. And I loved The Prestige.

  6. Be warned that this isn't really a whiz bang action film - it's a lot more cerebral and spends the first hour selling the idea of dream thieves and the logic and rules behind it very hard. It's complicated in the sense that you're having to follow something like four plotlines running concurrently with one another. I'm really looking forward to seeing it again, because I'm pretty sure there's some things going on that I missed.

It's much like Ocean's Eleven in the sense that it's a lot of planning (like, say 60-70%) and when they execute the plan, things get really, really exciting and really, really trippy.

Really looking forward to this. I realised I messed up on my Last Air Bender sneak preview review, but I promise to make it up for this one.

This had better be good because it physically pains me to give money that may end up supporting that ruin-er of movies Leo DiCrapio.

"You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger darling".

James, got a few questions for you.

Is Tom Hardy in it much (the guy from Bronson)?

    How's Joseph Gordon Levitt?

And did it feel like Dark City?

    I'm pumped. It's 15 for 15 on Rotten Tomatoes.

  15. That's where he's from! I knew I've seen him before, just couldn't place where..

Both Levitt and Hardy have decent supporting roles and make their presence remembered it it - and they have pretty ample screentime. Hardy is the forger of the team, while Levitt is a longtime partner of Di Caprio's character - sort of like what Brad Pitt was to Clooney in Ocean's Eleven.

Dileep Rao - who was in Avatar and Drag Me to Hell has a similar, more background role like he had in Avatar, but this time as an alchemist.

The story is more centered on Di Caprio's character and Ellen Page, who acts as a means of exposing the rules to the audience and providing the entryway to the dream thieving (sort of like how Keanu Reeves was in the first Matrix). Nolan makes very good use of the cast he chose, even with the smaller roles that he gives to Michael Caine, Tom Berrenger and Pete Postlethwaite.

Not really - I can see where the comparison is coming from with the looming, shifting cityscape images you're seeing in the trailers, but Inception goes more for something a lot more surreal in tone and look and far less gothic.

Not that Salon has a sterling record for reviews, but O'heir really didn't like it. I can't decide whether to keep reading it or not, but I thought this line was great and had to share:

"'Inception' may have been directed by Christopher Nolan, but Nolan's dreams are apparently directed by Michael Bay."

    LOL!

Will be seeing this, as I try to see everything with Gordon-Levitt in it.

this movie is absolutely incredible. i have some things that i would like to discuss with others that have seen it, but will save the spoiler-talk for next week.

there are so many brilliant ideas in this movie that i lost track. this absolutely raises the bar for a few things.

    9/10 or higher.

Armond White gave it a negative review. He also gave Une Prophete a negative review and Clash of the Titans a positive one. Some people need new jobs.

I can't wait to see it. Even if Nolan doesn't hit the mark plot-wise, i'm sure the sheer scope, vision and style are worth giving it a positive review.
