the value of a post secondary education depends on the field you choose to work in. Your experience counts for more that your degree most of the time.

Thats said, I am also finishing gradute work and plan on doing more simple because in academia to be recognized and hired requires a lot of letters after your name. And i love learning and challenging myself although this is possible without an actual structured university environment.

It all depends on what you're going in for.

Try getting a job in Health, Engineering, Social Services, anything non-computer related in the government, Accounting, Education, (I can keep going...) without a degree.

The whole anti-post-sec. stance is usually held by entrepeneurs and computer nerds. These are two fields that don't always require a degree to make it far.

However, not everyone is interested in going it alone in those two fields, and therefore getting a postsec. degree is the opposite of a scam.

if you don't get anything out of post-secondary education, then you don't deserve to be there, and it's your own damn fault for not finding a good program suitable to your interests.

Look, I was told years ago that on every bus there is an idiot. I could never find that idiot.

Somehow that is analagous to you being a dirty hippie, even though you go University of Taiwan.

My DEGREE IN FINE ARTS (Hahahahahahahahhaahahahahah!!!) is going to get me places!

When directors, corporations and agents reject my portfolio, then I will just shove this piece of paper in their face! "LOOK! I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts!"

Yeah.. right.

Here's my rant about school this year:

I think what's great about this year was that I got to pick all the courses that I wanted to take. I know how to write art articles but my art criticism course (my prof was the curator for the Power Plant) helps me hone my craft.
As well, my photography courses are teaching me about techniques and giving me lab time to experiment.
I love documentaries but now through my Contemporary Documentary Media class, it's giving me new perspectives about identity, truth and documentation. Puts it all into context. Which I am so grateful for.
I am learning more than I have ever learned. I finally feel like I'm not slacking off, trying to drudge through school just to finish. I am actually learning valuable skills. It's great! I'm really happy there!
And to top it all off, I got a tuition scholarship so I'm not paying for any of this shit. Go team hardworking!

I think you can learn in any experience. School, life, trauma, whatever. I find that people complain about school but they're the ones who don't make the most out of it.

I absolutely loved studying psych, and I wanted more than anything to proceed to graduate work...even though I had a 10.6 average and excellent references, lack of spots available in my field prevented me from going.

I loved school, but make no mistake - for months and months after I finished school, NO EMPLOYER GAVE A FLYING FUCK THAT I HAD A BSC IN PSYCH

This is true.. Im starting my apprenticeship for electrician and my teachers at school said that i might be faced with old machine from 70's and 80's that run on different operating system sumtimes. A company is not gonna change anything for me obviously, so i have to learn how to work with it.

It might be a big step, but I think you'll need a giant leap to launch that kind of a career.

Cheers ... Ian :)
