My 17-year-old brother wants to have a mini-party on Friday night at my house, without my parents. They'll only let him do it if I'm there. we're talking about 20 people, swimming, I'm sure there will be pot smoking, and maybe drinking.

I don't have plans or anything but I don't want to be held responsible if anything bad happens. At the same time, I feel like I should help him out. I don't know what to do....

Ming.

LOL U wanna be out clubbing am I right? Well Establish some rules like it's gotta start winding down by 1 (or later if you're okay) and Nesta's right, bring over a few friends so you're not totally forced to interract with 17 y/olds all night (god I'll get flamed for that)

PS Hide EVERYTHING that's precariously balanced and/or valuable... it will get broke.

And it sounds dorky but tell him he's not allowed to get too fucked up because he has to look after his guests (who might otherwise drive home or do something else stupid in the swimming pool)

I'm thinking I might just make them all hand over the keys when they get there.

He said his friends like me. :D It's cause I smoke pot.

good opportunity in my opinion to create a nice memory for you & your brother. Enjoy the night; I’m sure he will appreciate your presence there over some other appointed guardian like a nosey neighbor !

Good call....
My sister and I used to have our house parties together.
Of course they were a lot larger than this small gathering. :)

Bring a couple of friends to hang out. That way you won't look out of place...

Just invite a couple of your friends so you'll have fun too.
Also you will have back-up if the kiddies start getting too stupid.
Also tell him that his parents are trusting him to not wreck the house and be wreckless.
If he screws up......he loses their trust and that is a big deal.

Personally I would never throw a part at my place, but 20 people is not too much. Just make sure a friend doesn't bring 5 other friends with them.

My parents had that rule with me when I was younger..then again I'm still not allowed to have a "party" at my parents house unless they're home. My brother never agreed to it...then again my brother is also completely straight-edge...

Definately have a couple of your friends over...if anything they can help you control things while making you have a little more fun. (You already have so many people offering *grin*)

Telling your brother to "not get too fucked up" is probably a good idea...but he should probably know that already anyways...

My brains shutting down.

He's probably gonna have the party anyways. Might as well be there, chill w/your bro a bit and be a nice big sister, and be able to make sure something stupid doesn't happen.

Legally, your parents would be in the rap if some drunk kid dove into the shallow end and paralyzed himself. Even if they didn't consent to anyone being there. It's only one night.....(tell your brother that too!)...I'd want to be there just to make sure that nothing really bad happened.

Exactly! Strangers who don't know you or your brother are more likely not to give a fuck about your house/property/responsiblity especially 17 year old strangers...come on you know it's true...:p
I've been in similar situations with my younger brother, for example when he was younger he wanted to smoke doobies with us, I felt bad about it, but wanted to seem "cool-older-sister-like" and keep him away from scketchy/bad encounters at the same time. If you're not there, who knows what may occur...

-nice to meet you yesterday:)
