today i got my iron ring. it's an engineering thing for all the engineers out there.

Boy, do I ever hope I pass all my courses this year.

the 'secret' engineering celebration was quite entertaining to say the least - i was ready to pull out my water buffalo fuzzy hat.

the best part about getting the ring is clinking it repeatedly on the side of your beer bottles/drinking cups when you are out. you have to continue doing so until you annoy the fuk out of the people who you are there with.

enjoy, and congrats!

'professional', 'moral', 'work'? what are these fantastically alien words you're using? during the almost 2 years out of school i have yet to come across such a description of what i do.

congrats guys.

did you know that, even though the iron ring tradition is canadian, the idea came from rudyard kipling?

it is supposed to symbolize your pride in your profession but it is also supposed to symbolize humility, as the rings were originally all constructed from a steel bridge that collapsed in quebec (commonly thought of as the greatest engineering disaster in canadian history).

i remember my dad telling me that when i was a kid.

you'd think. i have lots of friends that are engineers that just thought it was a neat ring. some knew about the bridge thing but none of them knew the idea originated with rudyard kipling. (they were all western grads though so maybe that had something to do with it.)

i think you just stumbled upon something...

we had to endure 12 excrutiating hours of watching engineering disasters, and we were not allowed to blink once. it was horrible. the pain was enough to make me vomit.

this is me at about hour 9, i will never forget that day.
