hype at madbar

Well I figured after having stayed in all weekend, that I deserved to head out to this!

Unfortunately all my tribe junglist bitches backed out on me (but there were plenty of others there so it was allright

), so I headed down by myself...

It was super packed when I got there, but seemed to thin out within about half an hour of my arrival...

Hype's set was awesome - I havent seen him spin since Syrous 5 year - he had alot of new shit with him, and he even had a little stretch of classics (he even spun ready or not, which I figured he'd be sick of playing by now)...there were a few major fuckups, but from what I've heard of Hype I was expecting it, and they didn't ruin the set by any means...the only complaint I had was his overkill on the scratching - I know hes wicked at it and all, but I found it to be distracting while I tried to dance...GQ was alos pretty good, I've never been a big fan of his though...

Overall I had a wicked night - the combination of having written a midterm, worked and walked to madbar and back, and having danced non stop as soon as I walked in caused me to leave a bit before I wanted to, but not without a huge grin on my face a lil kick in my step

Basic,

I was so going to go to this....

I had to work unitl 9 so I figured that I would have been out of luck for getting in (I mean Hype at Madbar?? come on!!) But from what I heard, it wasn't full unitl about 10:30, which meant I could have gone.

I should have called you last night...

Next time.....(if there is one).

Good gosh, my ears are still bleeding after this one.

Hype was his usual self, dropping his famous secret weapons (the ready or not/super sharp shooter/6 million ways dubplate, the DJ Hype version of Original Nutta, and MY personal favourite, his opener, the Shook Ones part 2 Remix which i think is absolutely brilliant.) He also had lots of dubs from the likes of krust, dillinja etc. I was lucky enough to be standing right up front, looking at the records as he put them on the decks... most of them were labelled "speacial for DJ HYPE" and stuff like that, so that was pretty cool. The normal party dancefloor rarely affords the common patron the opportunity to glance at the records as they hit the decks.

The scratching was the usual for Hype. I enjoy watching it, but it seems to be the same scratch routine that you'd hear on any hype album or tape. Not that I didn't enjoy it though. His scratching is skilled and quite brilliant. GQ complemented Hype as usual. His style bothers me on recordings, but frankly, in a party environment, it can be perfectly complementary.

Oh yeah, and DJ Randall was there, dancing right next to me in the crowd. Very cool to see the big UK originals coming out and dancing on the Toronto dancefloor! He was right into it, along with everyone else.

I had a great time, and it appeared that fun times were had by all. I felt super-priveliged to be there on a Monday night with a host of Toronto and UK talent. Toronto DJ's Marcus and Red Lion command respect for opening the night up. And man, has L Natural ever improved over the years. It's really quite noticeable when I listen to my old tapes and compare them to his live performances now.

Thanks to Big Joe for putting this one on.

I should have been there, Hype is definintley one of my top 5's to see. I just didn't want to be disappointed if I'd gone and Madbar was full.

See ya tonight.....CZECH!!!

RedLion played sweet ass beats with some good mixing.

Marcus came with nuff dubs and did his best to move the, what seemed to be dead, crowd. Wicked tunes!

Hype got the place absolutely frantic although the crowd still didn't have the energy.

Lush - I left as he was spinnin his first tune, good tune but I had to go sleep.

Thanks to everyone who made this happen!

Keep on bringin us the funk

Seeing that I don't live in T.O., I hardly get any flyers.
