Hotmail & Junk Mail

Lately I have been getting very little junk mail at my Hotmail account...and when I mean "very little" I mean that my overnight junk mails went from around 50/night to 0/night.

Does anyone know if they have made some changes to affect this? I'm not complaining, but I'm wondering how they are doing it.

They probably upgraded their junk mail filters.

They 'score' messages based on message content, subject appears, mime headers, etc etc...

It's a pretty comlpex and involved process, but works quite well.
I've set it up on my own mail filters and it cuts down about 90% of the spam.

You can set it to be 'more sensitive' or 'less sensitive', setting it too high may result in 'real emails' being marked as spam though so you have to find a happy medium.

related -- there's a 'report junk mail' button you can hit on mail in your inbox -- are they taking that seriously and compiling lists of shit-distributors?

good on them regardless -- i'm enjoying not having to pick thru 50+ junk emails a day

they are probably collecting data from the 'reported junk mails' and using it to update their filter lists.

sounds like a great idea. the whole process could be automated making it very efficient.

Yep, I just started getting all these "insurance quote" spams in my Yahoo box, too.

I just noticed this too.

I haven't checked it for about 5days. Normally my junkmail folder would be full but there was only 1.

That's why I switched to Yahoo, cause of the junk I got in my Hotmail account. That was over four years ago.

I think Yahoo just got that REPORT THIS AS SPAM option.

the tabs on top of the new hotmail were bothering me (mail, calender, today, etc)..
turns out there is an option in the new hotmail to switch back to the old tabs (inbox, sent items, etc)

I just discovered that.

I like the new look but the tab change was annoying. Solved!

When I check my Hotmail account on Monday I ususally accumulate 60 to 90 junk mails over the weekend.

Today I had only 14 and I hadn't checked since Wednesday.

I wondered what was up.
