Horse Racing

I'm in charge of running a horse racing event at wokr to raise money for charity. I'm going to tape and a few old races and then run an event in the boardroom as if the races were live.

Any gamblaholics on tribe? Can someone please provide a dummied breakdown of how it works. I've done a bit of reading, but the combined experience and insights of tribe usually add more value than books and website.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

What exactley are you asking?
How racing works or how to bet on racing?

Your first decision will be Standbreds (driver and buggy) or Thoroughbreds (jocky on top).

Thoroughbreds

And how to bet on racing. I've downloaded a few racing forms, but i'm pretty green when it comes to gambling, especially the ponies.

I probably shouldn't have volunteered, but i SOL now. I have to learn and I have to learn quickly.

Reading the form is an art. It's not something you can learn overnight or teach people in an hour.

Your best bet is to get the closing odds on the races you are taping, then present those to the people playing. Let them use those as a handicapping method along with silly things like horse names, gut fealing etc...

Try and make it fun, without taking it too serious.

There is a guide to reading the racing form, it's usually in the program or the form itself.

In there you can usually see the horses last start, finish times etc.

Or course, if you go with the buggies, all that information is in the program and it's a bit easier to read.

Why pre-record the races?
You can watch them on-line everyday from Woodbine with real odds etc.

Really, I had no idea. That would make things a little more exciting if the race is live.

It's for a charity event so I want as many people to play as possible, so the process has to be dumbed down, or at least simplified to make it accessible.

If I can't figure it out in an hour, then it's too complicated for mass appeal. Is it realistic to hope that I can figure out a way to reach the lowest common denominator?

watch woddbine races live, bring up the webtote which gives the live odds and let them palce their "bets" based on the real odds.

As far as picking the horses, don't over think it.
Just let them pick based on the pro's picks which are in the program, the odds before the races start, or for silly reasons as mentioned above.

Hope that helps.

Thought I'd bump this old horse racing thread for the enthusiasts here.

Anyway, I consider myself an absolute rookie and first started dabbling with the races in the mid-90's. Stopped for over a decade and went to my first race in the 21st century this past Saturday. To make a long story short, I won 2 out of the 4 races I placed bets on. That is 50%. So I'm definitely hooked again. I won the main event in the tenth race with my friend and forgot just how exhilarating a day at the races was.

We only placed $2 bets and had the time of our lives last Saturday. We had lunch there and drank Guinness all afternoon getting drunk at Woodbine. :D

Here's my winning horse Champs Elysees, I simply picked it because I've always loved the way the French pronoun the name of that beautiful street. The way it sounds is just so phonetically COOL. ;)

SENSE. forgot to mention pre scouting...You MUST see how the horses are behaving
when they are paraded ahead of post time. Who is horny...Who is wild...Who is focused.
Read the manuals, where is the horse from? When did it get to toronto? What is the
weather in relation to where the horse is from?
And allways bet off horses to at least show if they have an Italian owners name.
Otherwise sommabaddies gonna git hurt in jersey.
Other simple breakdown is betting to A. win, B. place. C,show, soo first second or third.
And you can combine your bets to pick the order of the three winners, Trifecta. Or the first two in order.

Great spring weather has once again revived my long-time interest in horse racing. Honestly, I'll probably be a lifetime amateur and beginner for the rest of my life. It's probably because nobody in my circle of friends is interested in horse racing and I can't really learn among my peers. If they want to gamble they'll either hit the casino or partake in other sports betting instead. Personally, I think there is something extremely cool and very classy about betting on the ponies. It is such an elegant and interesting sport, very different than anything else.

I started visiting Woodbine last month to watch the live races on the weekends, usually the thoroughbreds during the afternoons. Lately I've also been visiting Greenwood Telewagering theatre which is very close to my house. However, the patrons at this place are so different than Woodbine. They are mostly male degenerates with obvious gambling compulsion in their blood. Have to admit, I love hearing the foreign accents especially the Caribbean people with their patois when an exhilarating race is going on. LOL

Just opened a HPI account linked to the Woodbine site that allows me to bet on different races around the world. Anyone else have one of these accounts and tried betting online? This weekend I'm going to try it out and dabble with the races in Australia and Hong Kong.

I loooove the races! Haven't been in ages, though. When I was younger, I used to help exercise my neighbour's standardbreds and help out as a groom at the track. I miss it!
A day at the races is definitely now on my to-do list for the summer.

Been to several live horse races before, but yesterday was my first time attending Canada's most prestigous and biggest race the Queen's Plate at Woodbine. Historically it has 152 years of tradition in its making. My winning horse number 9 "Inglorious" won and it was truly an amazing race.

First time attending a race wear people actually got dressed up and the beautiful women wore fancy hats. :D Hopefully, I'll be attending the Prince of Wales race next month in Fort Erie where they'll be lots of hats again.

DG, you really would have loved all the fancy hats yesterday. ;)

Here's the 100% legal horse wagering web site that is managed under Woodbine and its affiliates. The web site will answer all your questions about getting your money.

i went to woodbine a couple weeks ago and had fun, but then i decided to read an article about jockeys and the seriously fucked up lives they lead and the lengths they will go to to shed pounds before a race. it soured the whole thing for me.
