    What's the deal with this?

My parents could be pretty harsh at times, and I was no model kid - even being embarrassing to them at times I am sure, but I don't think they would have killed me for it.

my mom would say sometimes, 'i brought you into this world, and i can take you out' in reality the worse she'd do is dig her nails into my arm when i was be obnoxious, or teasing her.

my dad punched me once, but i actually deserved it (i really did).

So these folks believe there is more honor in doing time for murder than having a kid who doesn't follow old school cultural mores? Seems kind of retarded to me...

i'm betting the argument leading up to this had said daughter saying things to dad that were obscene to him, only because she was sick and tired of being treated like a piece of shit for so long.
sad that a family comes here to Canada, loving our freedom, and then slams the door on one of their own kin.
i really do believe when an ' honor killing ' is admitted by the guilty, they should be sent back home.

If they're citizens, there's nothing to be done.

But how about any violent (or major) crime, never mind honour killings specifically?!?

PS - "Dey tuk arr jerbs" etc

No, they should be charged and tried according to Canadian laws.
Sending them back would just be giving them a free pass.
The rest of their family should be sent back home tho.

Convict them. Take away refugee status, revoke citizenship and deport.

The family should be charged and forced to pay for all legal costs or deported as well.

This does not amount to a free pass. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated and I object to pay to keep these people in Canadian jails.

I had this exact same conversation last night. I'm offended at the fact that they're constantly referred to as honor killings. It's first degree murder.

But what is it about immigrants that makes them feel their own customs can contravene our laws? Is this particular to Canada, or is this a phenomenon experienced worldwide?

    the buzzword is 'reasonable accommodation'.

Is this thread about that recent incident in Quebec, because now the Defence is apparently planning to *plead insanity*, ie: the bitch-mommy was not in her right mind (d'uh). Which if in fact this is an actual honor-killing murder, I find to be a bemusing defence.
And it'll probably be the husband who'll totally blow the accused's defence, by stating that she (the accused bitch), was acting on deeply held *principles/ traditional values*. Sooooo.... the Prosecution really needs to get that guy on the stands!
    And then deport him.

That family moved to Canada to get a better life, better health care, better education, and freedom of choice. Unfortunately the poor girls father, and family forgot what it means to be Canadian.

As a Canadian, we have the right to think, believe, and say what we feel, but unfortunately its like the old saying, you can take the girl out of the trailer park but you can't take the trailer park out of the girl. The whole family is guilty, and I think they should bring back the Death penalty for shit like this. What kind of person can kill there own child and become reformed through serving time? NO ONE, No Way, No How! There is no such thing as an honour killing. There is no honour in killing a teenage girl who wants to fit in at school. I wish these editors would cut the crap and start calling it a disgrace killing. So now that we have 8 more people living in this country who feel they have a right to kill someone for thinking outside the box, now what do we do?

"Well lets give them some more free shit!"

    A FREE TRIP HOME

SEND THEM BACK TO THE CAVE THEY CAME FROM!

you are offended? in what way? mabey im misinterpreting your comments.

you are offended that someone would suggest that the premeditated killing of a girl by her father and her brother for the claimed reasons of honour is an "honour-killing"?

this is the precise definition of the term, it also happens to occur with greater frequency in the specific region that the accused is from. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) notes 286 women were reported to have been killed for reasons of honour in 1998 in the Punjab region of Pakistan alone.

the star's article has a disturbing quote:

In a police interview on the day Aqsa was killed, her mother crying and talking out loud to herself, was recorded as saying she thought her husband was only going to “break legs and arms,” but instead “killed her straight away.”

do you really see this as no different from first degree murder in a mob hit? my concern is that giving it the term "first degree murder" avoids any nuanced analysis of what occurred.

of course its not a case of implicating an entire community, but it is a case of considering what exactly occurred here, and that while rare, it is less rare in the regions where this family came from, and there are a host of support groups in Canada specifically dedicated to help girls who fear for their lives. this exists for people of all cultures, but how often do you hear of 16 year olds strangled to death by their fathers, w/ the help of a brother, while the mother was thinking only legs would be broken?

last time i heard of it 4 girls were drowned in the ottawa river while the father and brother were charged with murder, their claim: honour killing.

but somehow YOURE offended because its not simply labeled as "first degree murder" and given the title "honour killing"? why?

  25. acheron

semantics. it's an insult to the victims to call it an honour killing. They're trying to imbue what is nothing more than premeditated murder as something to be proud of.
