Any recommendations for companies that reface your cabinets?

We have kitchen cabinets from the 90s.
DSC03943.JPG

Solidly built oak cabinets, but the style of the cabinet is in complete and utter contrast to the modern look that we've been working to introduce. The construction of these cabinets is really solid though, so we'd like to use the boxes at least, and change the doors while also refacing the remainder.

We've already had a consultation from NuBold Cabinets who is contracted by Home Depot, but I was surprised at the $$ amount considering how many materials we'd be reusing. Perhaps the savings in materials is offset by the cost of labour involved with refacing?

Any recommendations, particularly based on firsthand experience, would be helpful!

a) Palm sander with 80grit sandpaper, then 120 grit, then 60 grit...
b) choose the alcyldye based finish of your choice
c) take a sponge, and brush, and diy.....

Should cost you 2 days of inconvenience and about 80$ in materials

^while we considered that, we really detest the style of the cabinet door.

That, and we're both very busy individuals; we've done a lot of other renos ourselves, but this is something that we'd prefer to have handled professionally (we also plan to have additional cabinets installed and new countertops)

annnd, the style we have in mind isn't actually a stained wood at all...

Have you though about just painting?

We did give serious thought to painting (and restaining) but we just don't think it will work with the minimalist, modern look we're going for. We've done a lot to achieve that too, from replacing the baseboard trim with an entirely bevel-less trim, to replacing all interior doors with shaker-style doors. So at this point we're pretty certain that we want to have simplistic door-fronts too.

The style we're looking for is something more like this, although not in this colour:

Thank you for all the suggestions! We're still looking for a company to reface our cabinets though

hey persephone,

I don't have a recomendation along the lines you're looking, but what about starting by changing the hardware to something more modern and sleek, that might do the trick and update the whole look.

hey,

what does the back of the cabinet face look like? does it still have that ugly arch detail?

maybe you can flip it over and paint it and use the back as the front? it's a stretch... but ya never know.

So we are in the midst of doing our front porch reno and are debating on changing the front door and windows. We are looking for something similar to these doors in toronto, but are having a devil of a time tracking something down. Any suggestions?

can't say I've come across anything like that here, it's more a 60/70's design so it's pretty niche, would you consider buying reused at an antique store?

you could probably easily hire a local artisinal carpenter to make them. I mean, it's just a door.

We would, I keep meaning to check out the door store on castlefield to see what they have. The only issue I have with used is the possible retrofit of the door. I was hoping I could get something to just "pop" in so to speak...

Back up in this thread.

Looking to repave the driveway. Any personal rec's. Have gotten quotes from a few and still looking. Thanks

ps. Just to follow up on an old post. Bowen Foundation Repair kicks ass. Anytime we do some reno I always try atleast one of the ppl that Holmes uses on his show and then laugh at their prices.

Great people, fair price, they did an awesome job, including a few followups to make sure we were happy with the work. I can't stress enough how happy I was with BFR

Look for a paver myself. So far got 4 quotes for a 25x25 driveway in the $2000 to $2500 range. Got one quote for $4000. All with 2 to 3 inches of compressesd ashphalt. Is this comparable?

PS I'm surprised you got a good deal from Bowen. When i got a quote from them it was like 4x the price of everyone else. Maybe because it had to be done by hand??? or they just didn't like my house :)

:) Bowen was on par with the other quotes I received. That's wierd dude

74 x 11. Everyone seems to quote the same materials. 8" crushed limestone base, compacted to 6". HL3 asphalt. I've gotten quotes from $2000 to $4000. One dude at $1000 which is really sketchy, some old italian cat. I've also heard stories about some guys using your removed asphalt, and crushing it off site to use as your base!

The back has the same arch detail too.

We've thought of painting, changing hardware, but again - it doesn't jive with the minimalist and clean lines that we've used everywhere else in the home.

What about laminating a very thin board in the wood of your choice over top of what you don't like? I've seen sticky back boards about an eighth of an inch thick (I think it was Home Despot) for relatively cheap. You could use spray foam as a filler in the hollow (spray, let dry and shave down to level). Just a though...

Persephone

^hrmm...would that mean that the centre had a hollow part that could feasible be punctured?

We've found that you can purchase the refacing materials and do that yourself. Might not be such a bad idea

oh crap. does paint change colour over time???

I just dug up pour bathroom paint to do some touch-ups, it's about 5 years old but we shook the can really well and it didn't look like there was any separation and it smelled normal.

so I did my touchups on a bunch of spots and now the colour has dried significantly darker than the bathroom walls. i know it's the right can of paint that was originally used... what the heck happend!!??
am so mad since I'm sick and this is my only kid-free day and I didn't plan on spending the whole day painting the darn bathroom all over again

much easier to just paint the whole bathroom, remember the paint already on the walls has 5 years of wear and tear and such so the touch ups will stand out cause it is new paint on 5yr old paint

Jennika

TRIBE Member
yup, that's what we ended up doing. we repainted the whole bathroom with the same colour, though it really does look darker so either the walls lightened or the paint in the can got darker over time. very odd.

regardless wasn't planning on painting the whole thing but it's done and looks better
