HIV tainted blood stolen from B.C. hospital
Apr. 4, 2006. 11:25 AM

VANCOUVER (CP) — Thieves have stolen HIV-infected blood from a downtown-Vancouver hospital, BCTV News on Global reports. The blood was reported missing on Monday after a St. Paul's Hospital staff member noticed a locked freezer had been forced open. Hospital officials say there are regular security patrols near the lab and there are hopes the thieves will be caught on security tapes.

The blood vials are kept in the lab as part of a University of B.C. research. Global News reports the blood is dangerous for three days as HIV can only survive outside the body for that time.

The labels on the vials contained patients' names.

Everything about this is quite troubling.

Not the least of which is the privacy breach that is sure to have far-reaching implications to the infected individuals whose specs are now public knowledge.
