Ok, I'm planning a trip to Miami in March and I was wondering something.

How strict is the US right now for passports?

Before I know it used to be "Photo I.D." at the airport and your in the States.

But after Sept 11th.....has that changed much?

It'll take me 6-8 weeks to get my passport and that's cutting it very close to my estimated departure date.

So should I go tomorrow and get the photos taken?

It takes 10 business days if you go directly to the Passport Office but be prepared to wait 2 hours while you're there.

Actually, when I got mine last February it only took 5 business days...but maybe things have changed.

bring a birth certificate and photo ID like a drivers license.. and a health card if ya have one and you'll be fine. BUT passport is always the safest bet

it'll cost you 85 bones, another 30 if you want to express it. I just applied for mine on friday cause I'm flying down to the states this saturday. I hear that having the passport is a better idea than just a drivers license.

I showed up at 4 and was outta there by 5.

cheers,

oh, forgot to mention that if you ever want to apply, you can go to a site and download and print some pdf's so it saves you from finding the forms elsewhere. they say at some point in the future they will allow online applications.

here's the addy:

I just got mine in December and it's now 80$ and takes 10 business days BUT if you show them your ticket to prove that you really do need it, they will charge you more money and have it ready sooner...

good luck

I went to Miami first week of Dec. to see Teneglia @ SPACE. Bring your Passport for sure. It just helps to eliminate some of the potential bullshit that happens at Customs. A few people ahead of us got the 3rd degree without it and we zipped on through. Sure it could have been for other reasons but I think its better to set yourself up with the least potential for hassle. If you mail it in soon you should have it in plenty of time.

Also, don't go to Milano on Oceanside for dinner (close to the Versace Mansion).
The food sucks. SPACE was amazing. $8.00 drinks but free-pour triples (the bartenders will ask you if its strong enough) almost make up for it - no cover too if you're early enough.

I honestly don't think Sept. 11th has ANYTHING to do with it. You've always needed a passport haven't you?

if you're only going to the states you don't need a passport as long as you're a canadian citizen. Birth cirtificate and photo id is all you need.
I haven't been myself since sept 11th, but my entire family went to boston in Nov, and I have several friends who flew with out one.
