Alice in Chains' Layne Staley was found dead in his Seattle home on Friday evening.

The King County Medical Examiner positively identified Staley's body on Saturday (April 20), following an autopsy. Exact time and cause of death are pending, as laboratory results could take several weeks, a spokesperson said. Staley was 34.

Police responded to a call to check on a person's well-being at Staley's address in Seattle's University District at 5:41 p.m. PT on Friday, according to the police report. Upon discovering the body, which is presumed to have been there for several days, officers called investigators from the medical examiner's office, who arrived on the scene at approximately 7:30-8:00 p.m., a spokesperson said. The body couldn't immediately be identified as that of Staley, whose longtime battle with drug dependency was a central component of his band's music — a dark and bombastic sound that continues to influence artists some 15 years after the group first formed.

It's really unfortunate. It's been so long since the band has released anything. I was hoping we'd get to hear some new stuff pretty soon.

RIP

Though I quite agree with the fact that grunge died with Kurt Cobain, however this is just the final nail in the coffin.

did anyone hear the stuff he did on his solo project: Mad Season? that was even better than the AIC stuff, IMO

Mad Season stuff was great, but soo depressing. His voice conveyed so much sorrow. "My pain is self chosen..." I think I have all AIC albums. One of my fav songs is Down in a Hole.

"jar of flies" was one of the best....the whole album was great for those melancholy days when you just felt like being by yourself... you know?

i heard about this on the news and it made me really sad....i kind of grew up with grunge and when i heard that layne died it felt like i grew up in the 60's and just heard that jim morrison died...interesting parallel.

It's a damn shame :( But his time was up I guess.

I wasn't expecting anything of substance to come from the band in the future so maybe that was the nail in the coffin.

I had to pull out the cd's and give em a listen. For old times sake.

It is a great loss, and it's too bad he never got clean. He was a very talented musician.

Layne Staley is a loss . A fine musician .

^^How about the Eddie Vedder wanna be's instead? (nickleback, etc)
Grunge never died. It just got mainstream, then rotted like the bananna you forgot about in your napsack.

Too bad Layne couldn't make it outta his hole.
I really, really like my jar of flies tape for those angry/sad days.
Vintage Seattle sound.

What I posted in the other thread:

Died this weekend of a suspected heroin overdose. Just another hurting person who tried to heal himself, using art. I wonder what happens that these people go unseen, or unheard. Unhealed.

How sad.

It feels so incredibly weird each time a role model or icon from my youth dies. It feels even weirder when they die at their own hands.
