i chalk it up to them being ignorant

exposed to so much good much music by that camps counsellors,
it was right on yonge st in richmond hill, called camp keechiha (keeping-children-happy)
shit included ghosts of orphan kids and shit!

rakim had game like nobodies business
i dont think he could take down kool g rap or kane as top though

the thing i love about the true MC's is they dont beef about talent, it is what it is and they only stand on how they battle
if you get beat you got beat. the fakers and such are the ones who cant admit they got beat and invent drama to distract from that fact

It was his delivery and his voice that got most people's attention, but consider how quickly he rattles off his rhymes in Follow The Leader - he's going at a breakneck speed with a lot of complexity in the wordsmithing.

Kool G Rap is a legend in the business though, so it would be a battle of the titans if they squared off head to head.

no doubt

you cant say Kane dont flow and change shit up within one stanza

slick i have to give credit to large for being able to spit, rap, and do it quick time and yet you hear each lyric, it isnt gibberish(edit) he also does it in a british accent :)

anyone can SPIT rhymes, it is the guys who can do it and still be understandable who do it for me.

Kane for me was a bit more difficult for me to appreciate - I think it was the whole Hip Hop's Casanova thing that kind of turned me off of him. He still put out some incredible albums, just not something I was feeling.

Slick's sing song delivery was a pioneering approach at the time.

kane and g rap were part of the juice crew way back
imagine if they got their act together and just threw down

you cant have 2 titans rising at the same time i guess.

no one has slick ricks flow, it is its own genre like flavour flavs without the crazy :)

shit, i didnt even touch on your casanova point.

all i have read and seen was that he made a decision to go that way to merge the rnb and hip hop to grow the sound and make it so hip hop wasnt so pigeon holed

if you want to see how respected and talented the BIG DADDY KANE is check the mtv hip hop honors for him. i check it at least once a month and i still get goose bumps

Move over bacon theres somethin' meatier
A natural born lover with love to give free to ya
Meatier, so all you bacon lovers move over
'Cause Im so smooth they should call me Blackanova

Im not tryin' to say that Im number one
Im just a smooth operator that gets the job done
So, let me lick you from head to toe
Real slow

'Cause ever since I was young I could keep girls sprung
Just by the movement of my tongue
I remember it all started way back
In mm. kindergarten

Some played with Lego's, some played with play-doh
But I was feelin' girls like a ripe tomato
And now its 1990 and you can find me as I dunk
Lockin' up girls like I want

Yes I got a harem but I dont share em
I collect em like podium and mm, you gotta see em
Because the ladies is all I dream of
And not even Anita baker can give sweeter love
You know why?

'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
Yes, I can

Step up girls and get somethin' to treasure
And welcome to the smooth operators palace of pleasure
And if youre wonderin' if I want it
I got a kraftmatic with your name written on it

I reminisce sayin' I take 'em eight to eighty
But I was just kiddin', no you have to be a lady
Even if youre too young, with the hypes body
I just dont go to a similar party

So all those of age, we can get intimate
Bumper to bumper, so you can get your fender bent
I treat girls just like pastry
Mm, tasty

Very kinky when it comes to hanky panky
A well known player, but not for the Yankees
I wont say Im the baddest or portray that role
But Im up to top two and my fathers gettin' old

Im takin' love to a brand new height
And if lovin' girls is wrong I dont wanna be right
'Cause my man baby face said that its no crime
And of course Ill work Diana Ross overtime
You know why?

'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
Yes, I can

If I was on the movies Id frame roger rabbit
Play spike lee with Jessica because shes gotta have it
But Im not an actor, Im just a mack
That charms girls as I whisper sweet nothings to attract her

And bring about that feelin' of passion
To have her on my body like modern day fashion
Layin' next to me, in pure ecstasy
Youre like a door and you know that sex the key

So send your man to the lost and found
Im bringin' somethin thats world renowned
In other words good lovin' thats major
I got girls in more areas than a sky pager

Runnin' around sayin', please me, please me, please me
Thats why I say it aint easy
But Ive been able to maintain my status
With ladies mackin' without ifs ands or maybes

And other players just cant understand it
And couldnt keep they girls even if they were branded
I always end up with them on my shelf
I gotta jump back and kiss myself
You know why?

'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
'Cause I can do it right
Yes, I can

We could be here all day with this list! Personally I really enjoyed the early 90s rappers more than late 80s.

But I'll +1 Bernnie's KRS1 and add the following:

Masta Ace (also a great story teller)
Del
Buckshot

and there's...

"Bust a nut in your eye to show you where I cum from."

And of course Busta Rhymes has such a unique flow.

Some miscellaneous versus I like:

The Last Huzzah - EL P's verse
https://youtu.be/N0ijOe3sGEk?t=3m41s

The Das Racist verse is nutty too, and Danny Brown is on par. Despot seems to be a big deal to some, but he doesn't seem to have much depth imo (sounds like a bostonian rapping). I do enjoy some of his verses.

The usual suspects are already mentioned, but I'll add (some well known, others not but they all had an impact)

Percee P (under rated, been around since day 1 pretty much though)
Lord Finesse
CL Smooth
Keith Murray (if he'd gotten his shit together and stayed out of trouble, he'd be a legend)
Kapone (check out 'no jursidiction')
Shabazz The Disciple
