Good places for a first date

Im going on a date this Thursday with a girl I met a while ago, and I have seen her once or twice since, but this will be our first proper date. We are meeting in the downtown Toronto area, and we wont have transport, except cabs, and wondered whether the knowledgable Tribers could help me out. Something cool, but not too heavy or over the top.

We need more info. What's she like..what are you like. Do you wanna do something active, see something cool, chill or get shitfaced?

Live Jazz @ Reservoir Lounge.

Church and Wellington, on the north side, just west of church. Black sign.

Good for chilling, conversation(in between sets) and the music takes all of the pressure off you to keep up conversation.

Go for a walk after, to wrap things up.

Great food too.

Those are all great ideas :)

Some other suggestions....

INSOMNIA (Bloor & Bathurst) Great loungy bar/restaurant, live djs (thursdays it's jazzy D&B) great art work, amazing food and really hot servers ;)

PANORAMMA (52 floor of the Manulife center)

Great deserts, nice atmosphere and amazing view.

Have a good night, dates are so much fun :)

my fave place but a little outta the way. Ferro at St. Clair and Christie (1 block west of christie).

Very very neutral location. Good food and great atmosphere without being snooty at all. It's somehow really noisy in there and yet really romantic. Cozy but nice and chic looking at the same time. Music tastes aren't an issue as it's usually just background electronica.... nothing offensive or too poppy.

Dinner date for 2 with appetizer after taxes, tips and a bottle of wine comes out to like $80 even (depending on the wine).

I drag people out there for every occaision i can think of and everyone comes away universally liking the place and bringing their friends.

Im really into anything sporty and most musical tastes, but not too keen on anything heavy or thrashy. She likes Britpop, which is convenient because im British, so I would like something fun, not too expensive, where you can talk, but not have to talk all the time (avoid awkward silences). So some kind of music/band could be good, with some food and drinks to go along too.

hah, i'm on christie just south of st. clair...i've walked by Ferro a hundred times, but i've never gone in.

Have you been to Orizzonte? The owner comes out during dinner, playing guitar and singing romantic italian songs...haha

If you skip the wine it's super affordable. We're talking $40 taxes and tips in. Definetely a spot to hit on a sun night when it's not too crazy. I recommend their white wine mussels and their whole calamari. Pedestrian choices I know but they make top notch versions of both. Add a couple of pints and that's a great meal.

Orizzonte is great! It's defintely on the cheese side of things but man it's a great cheese. =)

Back to the thread starter though, another place came to mind. Julie's Cuban. It's south of college on davenport. Again, a little out of the way but worth it. Very friendly neighborhood vibe with authentic cuban food. Something very different and off the map even for people who consider themselves toronto experts. Reservations are a must though as it is always packed to the gills. Very inexpensive and they make the best mojito this side of cuba.

7 west, maybe if it's 2001 still (and it's not).

It's easy... determine whether you and your date worth: Fancy, Good, Sad, Pathetic and then select accordingly.

Fancy:
-Le Paradis
-990
-Preggo

Good (aka Not-fancy)
- Tortilla Flats
- Gypsy Co-op

Sad
- Mandarin
- Tucker's Marketplace

Pathetic
- McDonalds
- Burger King
- Tim Horton's drive-thru

You're probably looking to be impressive or romantic or something (in other words, this is probably not helpful at all), but Sneaky Dees has SUCH YUMMY nachos...and cheap beer. mmmm....nachos :)

if you are meeting up not too late the distillery has a bunch of galleries ,restaurants and nice little shops. Can grab a expensive meal at the Boiler House or Pergi , or a cheaper meal at 1812.
