i was wondering if anybody knows of any movies similar to the 12 monkeys, fight club, the usual suspects, etc.

all very good movies, and very well done.

I'd suggest Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels and Snatch
They aren't really like those other movies ... but they are brillantly directed
And the actors pretty much all do an amazing job
I'd also suggest Run Lola Run
And if you're a fan on Kevin Spacey rent K-PAX ... I saw last night and it's one of the better movies I've seen in a while

In the category of really good black-and-white movies that make you think a lot:

The Man Who Wasn't There
Pi (fucking awesome soundtrack)
Dark Days (again an awesome soundtrack, all by DJ Shadow)

Not answering your question at all, but it's what I'd probably watch today.

I just didn't get that movie
I'll admit that the director did a wonderful job
But I don't think it's as good as everyone says it is

Too true...some wicked Spacetime continuum...and the piano segment from the start of Gus Gus-Anthem...fantastic.

Has anyone seen 'Following'?? It's by the director from Memento about a guy who spends his time following people then get found out and strange things begin to occur...i may go rent that today.

Following is pretty good. Its in black and white, and its production is extremely indie, but it draws you in nicely. It uses a lot of the same tricks Memento does, and really blows up in your face at the end. I haven't thought about this film in awhile, but I gotta say its worth takin a look at. It's a film that you might want to watch again to pick up the clues you missed the first time.

Probably my favourite movie of all time. On a related note, I watched Pig In The City in Radio Shack this morning with a slight hangover. Kickass.

Kurosawa pulling a Tarantino forty years before

I just bought the Criterion DVD :D

Rents, Following is good, but not quite as good as Memento, you can definitely see Nolan's style emerging, and it was definitely a promising start.

Also:
Insomnia (the original - it's fucking awesome)
Shiri - interesting film that outgrossed Titanic back in 1998 in Korea.
Jin Roh - anime from the creator of Ghost In The Shell. Strange little film
Avalon - live action film from the creator of Ghost In The Shell. Think Ghost In the Shell or The Matrix , if it was directed by Ingimar Bergman. Very slow but stunningly good.
Metropolis - anime that has one of the most disturbing endings that is similar to Dr. Strangelove. You'll never listen to Ray Charles the same way again.

Along the lines of more anime -

Macross Plus
Cowboy Bebop

Along the lines of Canadian content -

Hard Core Logo (one of my favourite movies of all time)
Highway 61
Last Night

Along the lines of everything else for a cold day -

Rushmore
To Sir, With Love
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Or there's a Star Trek: The Next Generation marathon on TNN today.

I tend to go for :

fucked up / insanely creative types of films
stuff with really good audio engineering
off the wall humour
cloak and dagger flicks
guns, self destruction, obsession, intense emotions, insanity

Some of my favs :

jacob's ladder
requiem for a dream, pi (aranofsky owns, as does clint mansell, the guy he always does his soundtracks with)
saving private ryan = best audio engineering ever
heat = best shootout scene ever
anything by stanley kubrick (full metal jacket, 2001, clockwork orange, etc.)
screen adaptations of tom clancy's books (red october, clear and present danger, patriot games, etc.)
ninja scroll, ghost in the shell
ronin = best car chase scene ever
anything with bobby deniro actually

and although I'm ashamed to admit liking anything related to Oprah besides overeating, I actually liked "Beloved".

Even Spartacus?

Ronin's car scene was great, but what car chase would last for 20 minutes? I know it's 'just' a movie, but you can't cop out an excuse for tha.t

I'm guessing you're looking forward to Sum Of All Fears with Affleck and Morgan Freeman next month?

Also, Matt Damon is supposed to be in talks for Rainbow Six. Hope it gets made.

From the Ministry of Rainbow Six = kick ass action

themes of obsession are pervasive in aranofsky's movies

the guy's choice is to live with his neurological defect, that drives him insane but gives him insight into the mathematical nature of life, or to give up that obsession and be okay with being comparatively ignorant

matters complicated by the fact that he just wants to find the solution and other people have perverted interests conflicting with that (stockbrokers wanting to profit from it, teacher's ego not wanting to be surpassed, jewish community with gaining power from it)

Not really...I like Morgan Freeman but Clancy started to suck large and get fairly tiresome a few years ago...the fact that he has books out with his name on it but ghost written by other authors annoys me as well
