I am currently looking for a new gym to go to in the downtown core. I was wondering if anyone can recomend a good gym that has a decent free weight section.

I went and looked @ a new gym calle www.dieselfitness.ca and it is killer but I want to have other options before I lock myself in on such an expensive membership.

any suggestions?

There's a Goodlife at Queen & McCall that I go to. It has a pretty full free weight section and it's never overly busy (the best part), even during lunch. It has all the dumbells and bars and whatnot.

I think it's $50/month.
I'm not totally sure though, I get hooked up through my mom's teacher union and get a sweet annual price instead. I think when I was paying month to month it was around that...

the goodlife at yonge and bloor is supposed to be quite nice and you'll pay the same amount to work out there.

I don't know how downtown you are looking, but I go to Trainers at Bathurst and Bloor. It's basic no frills but they have good machines, rarely crowded and the membership is about $40 a month, and even cheaper if you pre-pay your year.

I used to go to the Balleys at Bay and Bloor, and I am much happier at Trainers.

the changing rooms at young and mccaul are pretty nasty - don't go there if you're going to require a shower afterwards.

lol!

If you sign up now it is $82 a month, but it will come up to $107 a month in the future.

It is honestly the slickest gym I have ever seen. It even has a dj in there!

but it is expensive!

Plus I hear the customer service girl there in the mornings is hot.

And Matt, do you mean the changerooms at Queen and Yonge? or Queen and McCaul. The ones at Mccaul are squeaky clean in the morning/early afternoons, but if you wanna shower any time in the evening they get kinda grimey, but that's kinda to be expected.

There's a serious towel shortage problem at the Queen & McCaul location recently as well. I think people are hording them!

Towel thieves...

That's cuz people steal them, or leave them on the floor in the changeroom meaning they don't get washed until they are collected the next day. I mean how frikken hard is it to take your towel downstairs once you're done.

You would be amazed at how many people feel the need to steal a towel that barely covers your nether regions. They order in boxes of 100+ towels every couple of weeks...

I like the Metro Central Y. I think it's about $50 - $60 / month. Plus, with your membership, you can use any Y in Canada.

I think the Athletic Centre at the U of T (corner of Harbord & Spadina) offers memberships to the public.

I'm not sure about the weight rooms at either place, however,

Peace,

Sabina

I was a member at the Queen and McCaul GoodLife for about a year a while back, and I really liked it. Good environment, good free-weights, good weight machines, clean, friendly, good cardio theatre and a nice sauna.

Only drawback, no pool. OH, but there are squash courts.

I never found the changerooms or showers to be dirty, quite the opposite.

BBB.

..actually, the second drawback was that I saw John Gallagher from CityTV naked once. Brrrrr! My eyes! The goggles do nothing!
