Hollywood's Dirty Little Secret

Just finished watching CeeBeeCee's Passionate Eye, and the had a special on how the Golden Globe Awards are a scam ( http://www.cbc.ca/passionateeyesunday/feature_180104.html ).

The organisers, Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc, are basically a bunch of nobody's. A few credible journalists, a few b-movie directors, and a lot of old people. About 80 people in total nominate and vote for the awards. 80. That's it.

There was at least one obvious instance where a complete unknown had won an award back in the early eighties. The movie hadn't even hit the screens in north america. She basically won because her rich hubby paid them off.

Now, I'm not one to care too much about holywood (sic), but it's interesting to see this shit.

It's the laughing stock in Hollywood, they only recently attend the events and give a rats ass because it's a selling feature to their movies. Mo' awards, mo' tickets, mo' money, no problem.

One good quote in the documentary:

"With relatively few exceptions, the HFPA members are a bunch of eager-beaver pseudo-journalists (a fair portion of them write for publications in Germany and Japan) who smile much too broadly and get far too excited when celebrities are in the room. They're not ardent admirers of the art of motion pictures as much as people who appreciate huge bowls of tasty shrimp sitting on studio-supplied buffet tables. They're pigs who squeal on cue in order to flatter Hollywood and keep themselves feeding at the trough."

I don't think anyone gets excited about the GG awards, however, when I see films promoting themselves with these worthless awards it's a clear sign that Hollywood is using it as false leverage.

I doubt that many people really know that these awards are worth as much as siskel's flacid weiner.

i haven't seen the documentary but it sounds like a bunch of pissy movie critics slinging mud at another group of movie critics.

out of all the members of the 'academy of motion picture arts and sciences', i'm sure you'd be able to find a bunch that are star-eyed freaks, morons and/or losers. ditto for the 'directors guild', the 'writers guild' and all the losers that vote in 'the peoples choice awards'.

1. all movie critics are "pseudo-jouranlists". don't fucking kid yourself.

2. what is wrong with germany and japan? just because they were on the wrong side of WW2 doesn't mean they don't have good newspapers.

Yeah I find this whole concept funny, its not like the Oscars are any better. Just look at any of the movies that one in the last 5 years.

There were much better movies but just not popular. The whole "award show" thing is lame. Just a promotional gimic. And a way to make money.

the main problem was that a majority of the members of hfpa are not even film critics or journalists. at least the other awards have some credibility in who decides on the winners.

Nah, not even close. Anyone who's followed the industry has known for years that the Hollywood Foreign Press are pretty much just a bunch of fans who've managed to find themselves a credit somewhere, anywhere. The Academy are peers.

The fact they make some decent picks is due to the fact that they read Variety just like you and I.

As far as the Japan comment, I think it was about the fact that a lot of movie "journalism" there is essentially utter devotional fandom (think Tribute magazine times 10 - and you wouldn't want Marilyn Dennis or Elaine Loring or whoever runs that to be making film picks, would you?). Germany, i haven't a clue what that means.

You ever see that weirdo lady who identifies herself as from the Russian Jewish Times (or something like that) and without fail asks at least one (sometimes two) utterly bizarre and asinine questions to the actors and they usually respond with quizzical looks? It's kinda like the difference between her representing Toronto critics and someone like Bailey or Pevere. It was called film criticism and there still are some journalists who cover it - we've just been inundated with junkets and Ben Mulroney trying to make celeb friends by telling them he's the PM's son.

I love that woman!! I watch those press conferences just waiting for her to ask something. I remember after a 5-minute question to Denzel Washington, he just stared at her, not understanding what she was trying to say.

ugh, I don't even find it to be comic relief, she's so painful to listen to - her voice, the fact she seems to be making up the question on the spot, etc. It's like listening to university tutorial douchebags of yore.
