getting screwed by car insurance

i just got my renewal form from my insurance company and my insurance has jumped from 2400 dollars to 4800 / year.

i had 2 tickets a few years ago (but the three years has passed so they don't count anymore)..

so last month I rear end a guy.. i probably caused about 300 dollars damage to his car (the bump was so light, that I didn't even need to get my car repaired), and instead of calling me and giving me a chance to settle it with cash, he goes straight to his insurance company and makes a claim against me.

this one claim now makes me a young male adult, with a ZERO star rating ( i was at 5 stars before this)..

does anyone out there have similar experiences, and any input as to what they did to get cheaper insurance??
i tried calling a broker so far, and they could barely offer me a discount from the price quoted by RBC.

I make okay dollars, but i refuse to pay almost 1000/month to drive a car, it just won't happen. (car loan + maint + insurance + gas = 1000/month)

is there ANYTHING i can do ???
any insurance companies that will give me a break ?

please, i'm DYING over here.

Was in a similar situation to you when I had to renew my insurance... I was paying $2000 a year, and then they jacked it to $3500 because of a conviction... I thought I was fucked, so I checked the insurance hotline and they quoted me $2600 from Nacora Insurance Brokers (under Echelon General). It ended up being only $2200.

You can try Nacora: 905.502.0300

Or try getting a quote through the insurance hotline, they check all the insurance brokers to get you the best rate:

just experienced something similar back in january...last year i had my car stolen (from the garage were it was getting work done on it) & broken into at the Go train stn (stereo gone, window smashed in...not my fault again)...

i get my renewal, up to almost 2k from just over 1k per year which included a 40% surcharge for 2 minor tickets almost 3 years ago (ie 15km'h over the limit) ...in addition my deductible is now up to $500...i haven't had time to look around for another insurance company yet, but you have to wonder sometimes...

I agree with trying the hotline, that's where I found my new insurance company. I pay $900/year!

Know how feel, been there before, two years ago I had an accident that was 100% my fault, both cars where a write off, I got a ticket for that accident which compleminted my previous speedind tickets nicely, when I called my insurance, they told me they no longer need my business at all, so I called around and ended up a Wawanesa- if it is your firat accident, they won't count it against you, pretty neat.

- by the way, usually it is not the damage on the car that the insurance companies care about, they sell the car for salvage anyway, it is the liability.

I think the insurance company just did. :)

I'm looking into insurance myself right now. Apparently my biggest mistake as a driver was being born in 1978 as opposed to 1976 (I'm 23 not 25).

boo-urns!

when I was 21 those fuckers wanted 6G's for a MINIMAL policy on a Prelude. That's why none of you will remember me ever driving the car I've always wanted.

I am going through the same thing right now trying to get insurance on a new car and I was just quoted $5200! It seems I am guilty of being 22, single and male.

Chris - maybe it's time you got married?..... or a sex change?

hmmmm... or just stick it out until you turn 25. :)

$5200 sucks though. what are you repalacing the Acura with?

Just a quick thought ... but try Monnex. When I was shopping around last year, they were the cheapest by far.

L.

p.s. I think being a male < 25 (I'm assuming you are), you're going to get screwed no matter *where* you go, but at least you can try to keep the damage to a minimum at Monnex.

Good luck! :)

Or I can just tell the insurance agent I'm a 55 year old woman trapped in the body of a strapping young male. That'll work.

Anyone looking to marry for money? Anyone on Tribe a Russian mail order bride? Suggestions people!

If you're a male under the age of 25, need to be the primary driver on a vehicle, and have tickets and/or accidents, you're pretty much screwed. If you were with a broker in the first place, they might be able to talk to your insurer and reduce the rates, but in experience, a direct writer is less likely to do that since you never deal with the same agent and haven't developed a relationship with him/her.

Sorry to say it man, but I think you're gonna be taking the TTC for a bit.

Careful, C-NiCE ... not all Russian mail order brides look like Nicole Kidman in her most recent acting endeavour .... :p You just never do know what you're gonna get ... perhaps there are worse things than hefty insurance rates ... ;)
