Gay Marriage Poll

The "American Family Association" is conducting a poll on same-sex marriage.

Take it here:

http://www.afa.net/petitions/marriagepoll.asp

So far, these are the results:

I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and "civil unions" 37.78%
(168997 votes)

I favor legalization of homosexual marriage 53.88%
(241013 votes)

I favor a "civil union" with the full benefits of marriage except for the name 8.33%
(37275 votes)

HA!

Why the hell would anyone be opposed to just taking the name?

Sure you can have all the benefits of being married, but taking the other person's name - THAT'S GOING TOO FAR!!!!

I would think that the first criteria would fall under that with the whole "laying down with same flesh" passage in the Bible. Hell, just legally change your name in the first place, and you'd get around it.

Because they might recognize the fact that anyone can change their name, even now, to that of their partner.

So, the way around the whole 'civil union' thing is to get one done, then the next day change your name.

Marriage as an institution has become a an unsustainable farce. The people trying to defend it from the "Homosexual Hordes" should question why they're defending something that the average Hetrosexual married couple treats like a car lease ( I'm in for 3 years but I probably won't keep the car).

The irony is: The reason a majority of the gay couples want to get married because they BELIEVE strongly in the sanctity of marriage.

Once you forget the politics both sides of the argument want the same thing ....

But hey no one here is in the business of being reasonable?

Maybe I'm missing the point here but,

I think it's just referring to the name of the institution of 'marriage'. The gays can have a 'civil union' but not a 'marriage'...cause they already stole our best names like Bruce and Lance and Julian.

Sounds vaguely like marriage is a heterosexuals only club from what you're implying.

That's a really good point. It kind of makes gay marriage a second class citizens union. Just the title alone makes it very easy to legally discriminate against.

I"ve actually heard this argument - and I don't think that it's meant quite like that. The people who say this argue that marriage is defined as the joining of a man and a woman. Hetero - means mand woman - not a club, but by very definition. Therefore gay couples/ unions/ lifepartners who have taken the step that is the equivalent of hetero marriage should create a name for their union defining it other than marriage as it's a hetero term, make it unique to them, and I actually think it's a valid, non-derogatory point.

But I guess it's a matter of perspective, and some people like to get defensive whenever possible.

I think it's more of an equality issue.

Gay or straight, most relationships hit a wall, I don't think that gay marriages would produce any different divorce rates than hetro.

Although I guess we won't know that until it's given some time.

I think this is a very narrow minded view. I'm sure if you ask anyone married on the board if they view their marriage like a car lease would be offended.

High divorce rates simply reflect the unbelievable personal changes that can occur in 2 people in 10, 20 or 50 years.

The term is MARRIAGE, not HETEROMARRIAGE, therefore it applies to ANY two people that wish to have a union to the exclusion of all others.

The term marriage inherently means the union of a man and a woman as husband or wife. The question now is whether we want to redifine what the word marriage means and include same sex unions in its meaning, or attach another word to the union of same sex couples having separate words for the two types of unions.

That would be true if things were totally equal. There are countless numbers of serious gay couples who have been together for several years and can't get married. I think in the early stages of legalized gay marriages, those marriages will likely last because you'll have Mr. and Mr. who had been waiting 17 years to get married. Whereas any straight couple can get married anytime they think they're ready.

It's not necessarily a gay or staight thing, more of a "finally!" thing.

I might think it's an intstitution but I want my husband's benefits, people to buy me presents and to have lots of hot sex with him in the limo after the ceremony.

Marriage should be a choice. If people WANT to get married, that's great! Support them in their decision.

I mean, I wouldn't wear yellow sweatpants but if a friend wanted to, then I support them all the way.

I don't know why people put down marriage. It's not supposed to be a bad thing.

Like Socialism. :D

marriage is gay. that's why gay people want to be married, because then they would be more gay.

so much fighting over a definition. it's very amusing.

I see, so more effort would be put forth to make it work because of the amount of time it took to obtain the rights to marriage....

gotcha!

marriage is an outdated institution that reifies class, privileges normative family structures that i don't think are even valid anymore, and generally causes stress.

why does the government give you benefits just cuz you're married?

why do people who choose to remain single get the financial shaft?

how does that make ANY sense?

i say do away with it. everyone should be entitled to benefits, not just those who uphold the status quo.
