Foreign Film Movie Thread

Looking for recommendations. Not just any movie from around the world. But ones that you really dig. Or even better, that are from your background and you think gives a pretty good portrayal of your culture. Those would be neat to see. Cuz I can only watch Amelie so many times and wonder if people really are that beautiful.

After Pinepple Express, I need to see other things to erase my memory.

So this thread is for movies outside of Hollywood. Post away.

Also, there's a movie about Sarajevo I think.. About the war but it's a comedy? About two guys going at each other? Anyone?

Did anyone see 2046? Was it as slow as the beginning?
I had no idea Tony Leung won the Best Actor Award at Cannes.
I couldn't sit through 5 minutes of it and I'm a huge Wong Kar Wai fan!

Foreign films are pretty aptly covered in the normal thread, but here's a few:

Martyrs, Inside (L'Interieur) for a French horror fix. So violent and disturbing!

Tears For Sale - I don't know where to find a copy of this since it played at TIFF, but apparently it's the most expensive Serbian movie ever made. Honestly, I liked it better than Pan's Labyrinth. Same kind of surreal fantasy vibe.

Detroit Metal City - number one movie in Japan last year, based on a ridiculously popular manga. FANTASTIC. I met the director and he was hilarious. So happy to have his film screened at TIFF. This dude should direct every superhero movie from now on.

The Wayward Cloud - probably the best Taiwanese movie you'll see this year that features a dude eating out a watermelon which is between the legs of his lover. And after that, the movie gets weird. The director said he made it just to see if the Taiwanese government would ban it. It's pretty fucking sexy.

Bangkok Loco - this is without a doubt the most batshit movie I've ever seen. I can't even describe the plot to you, really. The colours and the styling is simply magical though. Reminds me of Bollywood.

Citizen Dog - this one is as weird as Wayward Cloud (it's also from Taiwan) but no real sex. It's got some really powerful scenes though, like the protagonist scaling mountain of plastic water bottles.

Duck Season - nice little minimalist story from Mexico about two boys that refuse to pay for a pizza when it's slightly too late. There's more going on there though, like the neighbor needing to use the oven to bake pot brownies and a subtle homosexual undertone between the boys. It's all in black and white and features some really striking cinematography at times.

I love Babette's Feast (it's about a chick named Babette who has a Feast)

- Kika
- Farewell my Concubine
- Delicatessen
- Turkish Delight
- Like Water for Chocolate
- Salaam Bombay
- Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down
- Y Tu Mama Tambien
- I don't know if "The Wedding Banquet" counts
- same with Jesus of Montreal

i love delicatessan- it's made by teh same peeps as Amelie but is much, much darker. For more cannibalism foreign film, check out The Green Butcher.

Sunny, if you're interested in Asian ultraviolence, there's motherfucking tons i could list. actually, foreign horror in general - Asian, Friench and Spanish.

i still need to see evyerthing on Flash's list except for Bangcock Loco (drumming porn!) and Martyrs (i won't go on and on about this as i've done it enough in the movie thread.)

I lent you Duck Season but you said you didn't like it, right?

Wayward Cloud used to be available at the RIP Suspect, but maybe Bloor location has a copy. I've seen Citizen Dog at 2QVideo on St. Clair, so the other lokes might have it.

Oh yeah, there's also Tokyo Gore Police. Never have I seen a movie sooooo ridiculous as this one. The gore is so over the top, cheezy at times. I enjoyed it.

oh yeqah, i stopped reading after the picture. it was strange. i juast didn't get how it was written like a comedy but looked like a bleak gritty drama.

You might enjoy Mister Lonely as well, about a collective of celebrity impersonators. It's really sad and surreal at times, which one should know by now to expect from Harmony "Gummo" Korine.

The Castle - amazing and funnny Aussie film about a man going against a land appropriation act for an airport to protect his home.

I am a cyborg but that's okay - cute korean film about an insane girl who think she's a robot so she stops eating and just licks batteries all day who falls in love with a guy who wears robot masks and steals people's quirk traits.

The King and the Clown - beautiful korean film about a tyrannical king who becomes infatuated with a beautiful male court jester, the costumes alone are worth the watch.

Happiness - a finnish film about a paramedic who enters as a newcomer to a group of old friends and his desire of one of them who is off limits and the relationship fall outs that are inevitable.

Reykjavik 101 - depressed and sexually frustrated guy in iceland who repeatedly and unsuccessful explores the city for new ways to kill himself.

Bob le flambeur - the original is wonderful but the remake with Nick Nolte (the good thief) is also pretty good.

Sakuran - even though its based an japanese manga, this story of a geisha who rises to the top of her district only to fall in love with one of her attendants is pretty visually stimulating.

Ran - it is King lear... in japanese... by Kurosawa.

and I forget the name of it but there is this movie about four Indian brothers or cousins living in west London who are obsessed with america and form their own country western band despite the culture shock of both their traditional parents and the less than thrilled londoners around them.

yes, i enjoyed it. other than the obligatory rape scene, it was much quirkier and enjoyable than what i'm used to from korine when he worked with clark.

ok, wayward cloud's on the list.

I forgot I saw this! This is a great movie.

Also, Executive Koala. It's exactly what you think it is, but not really.
