For those whole like cars ... 911: 996 or 997

I am debating between the 996 and 997 versions of the 991 for a summer car.

Performance wise, either car is fine with me. I like both models almost equally. I just am wondering if the 996 is perceived (from the general public) as "old" yet? Or does it still have a few years left in it. I feel as though many people can't even tell the difference, and I know you can grab a 996 for a significant discount. But I could be wrong. Exclusivity is somewhat important to me, but I don't know if I need to go all the way to a 997. So that might be a cheaper option to just pickup a lightly used 996. But then again, I would (most likely) have to buy a "used" car (which may have been abused).

Any of you car people have an opinion? Can you tell that the 996 is "old" looking? I know there are some of you on this board.

NOTE: if you don't know what a 996 or a 997 is, then your poinion is not really necessary. But I know a few of you on the board would be able to tell.

I am guessing from the sarcastic response, that my question will not be appreciated by Tribe.

I really like the 996, and don't think it's loks are dated whatsoever (for the time being), however I love that Porsche has brough back the classic round hadlights/front end on the 997. If I had the cash I'd go 997, the classic 911 lines make me cream my pants.

*note* any 911 you decide will be a gem regardless

Your thoughts are similar to mine ... I am kinding hoping for some more comments like yours to jnustify getting a 996. That would solve my dilemma. But it seems that most are mixed.

I am leaning towards the 996 (cuz I love it) and can save some cash. But then I have to deal with "used" cars, which is something I am not looking forward to.

isn't there better boards to ask about this stuff.. no doubt a lot of people know what the 996 and subequent numbers refer to.

porsches are a hot commodity and most people know the series number.

personally:

either care would be okay.. i mean either model.. they are both good looking cars.
I have yet to see a really ugly porsche.. maybe older models like sixties models but then again they are classics.q

I was hoping for realistic responses, since some on here recently posted a similar post regarding a Ford Focus. The purpose of the post is the same as that one. Just a different car.

It is not to show off (no one even knows who I am!). And this has nothing to do with "sex"!!!

I am on several Porsches board. Of course their response is the expected "Buy the newest car possible". But my guess is that they are just saying that cuz they have unlimited fundss available to them. I don't. So I was comtemplating the 996 (old version), and though I would ask some "average" people (ie: Tribe) if they though the car was "OK", or if it was a "Has Been".

OK, thanks for the comment. That is the type of response I was hoping for. I am looking for people to say that the 996 is good enough, just so that I can save some cash.

Normally I'd decide everything for my self, but I am really on the fence on this one.

As much as the name "Dirty Girl" gets me aroused, the purpose of this post has nothing to do with getting her to touch my gear shift. I already have a long-term "driver" who get's to "change gears" on a nightly basis.

Mmmm... 911s.
One day, I hope to have the same dilemna as you, salad ;)

I'd say 997, hands down... but if there's a significant difference in price, the 996 is still very nice. However, I'm not sure I'd want to deal with the hassle of buying a used porsche.

Like NCR, I'd have to know the approximate price difference between the 996 and 997 before passing judgement... but hey, you could always go with the 996 now and switch to the 997 in a couple years when you're more financially able to do so.

996 (used)-> $99,000 with some options I want
997 (new)-> $101,000+ with no options: (+ prolly $20,000 worth of options I would want)

There are used Porsche's with 5,000km on them. Those I don't worry about. 40,000km+ are the ones I worry about.

My other option is to wait for the Porsche Caymen, but that is a year away. 911 performance (almost), but with nicer styling and cheaper price.

But I hate waiting. Although it is prolly the smartest thing to do.

Get a 996 that is well documented.

Get on the wait list for the Cayman S fully optioned.

You'll skip the price drop on the 997, and after that, you know how well they hold thier value.

Have fun this summer, and then switch it off. If you prefer the 996 in the end ( and by what I've been reading you won't) you'll be able to flip the Cayman by selling your spot on the waiting list, or list it fresh off the lot.

Don't worry about what poeple think. You'll be going too fast for them to notice WTF you are driving anyway;)

Cheers,

Nick

996 Used is about the same price as Cayman with some potions. Except Cayman is coming out in likt Sept/Oct.

Cayman looks kick-ass, BUT I have purchased many first year cars (ie: BMW, MB) only to find out that I am disappointed with minor annoyances. Hence my worry with picking up a Cayman. But it is REALLY tempting (except for the poor release timing).

This sounds like the best advcie so far...

I'm sure you've done your homework already but here's a much healthier discussion.

If the Cayman is what you really want, I totally agree that you should save your money and splurge on that when it comes out.

Besides, I think I like the look of the 996 just a teensy bit more.

but hey, what do I know, I drive a Ford Focus...

See, I like the Cayman, but I am worried it will sell too well, thus eliminating the "esculsivity". Although I find it overpriced for its performance. See, it is priced under $60k US in the US (OK price), but same car is $84,000 CDN in Canada. It doesn't reflect the current currency conversion factor. :(

Anyways, I am totally confused. I like ALL Porsche vehicles ... I just don't know which is financially the best option.

That is what i am leaning toward, especially since most people will not notice the difference between the 997 and the 977. I will certainly notice the $20k price delta though! And I am sure i can get it cheaper with some negotiations.

That is what I was leaning towrds ... I was just curious if average people could notice the difference. But if most can't, then 996 it is.
