Didn't notice any spokes broken when I took it in last time - but they did replace 4 of them (not sure if they got broke while fixing?)

I'll check the wheel later tonight and see if there are any broken --- I may just wait until the spring and get a new wheel. Don't feel like paying for a new wheel right now when I'm hardly biking these days.

Just a hybrid/commuter bike - not a piece of junk, but nothing fancy either (Specialized Global)

Yeah, its infuriating and of course everyone loves their bike but it's really not worth getting an assault (or worse) charge over it. It's just a bike! A common thought, and I know I've thought it a lot and it's fun to fantasize... but a fucking ulock could kill someone. YOUR BIKE IS NOT WORTH SOMEONE'S LIFE.

hybrid bike: get what alex and I both ride: Specialized SIRRUS - any level. I love the geometry on it, very comfy and fast. Looks a little too slick so just scratch it up. Bought mine used for $300.

The commentary on that video is funny "don't steal bikes, bro SMACK!".

I find it hard to motivate myself to go riding after a little layoff.

Starr-kudos/congrats on learning to ride, it'll definitely be worth it in the end, you might get scratched/bruised though. I wouldn't bother with knee pads/elbow pads personally - reason being it might make you more tentative than necessary. Lastly, why the need for a Canadian-made helmet? Regardless, MEC is your best choice - for price/quality/fit.

I try to buy canadian/north american made whenever possible. It bothers me that everything is made in China and shipped here. Meh.

And trust me I need the elbow & knee pads. I've tried to learn to ride twice before in my adult life, 3 times if you count when I was really little. I keep getting better and I could probably do it, but I'm just terrified when I think about falling. I realize that the pads aren't a protection bubble, but I think it'll help me get over my initial "wtf am i doing" moment and just keep peddling. We'll see soon enough!

What's the safest way to get downtown from the West End? High Park area to U of T area. I want to try taking my bike but I want to avoid toe heads in cars.

I'm looking for a cruiser (20" frame) to replace my year-old Miele 100 that just got nicked...Budget is $300-450. Anyone got a line on something? I need it before Scotiabank Nuit Blanche on the 3rd.

I don't know shit about bikes, but something similar to my old bike would be ideal.

I ride tires that are bald like me in the summer (ultra gatorskins) but with wet leaves and wet streetcar tracks and maybe even a little sleet soon to be on the roads I use something with more tread in the fall. Randonneurs have lots of tread and are a little fatter. Although they are low pressure tires, they are still pretty hard and not so heavy either.
