a "zero tolerance" blitz will mean tickets galore for cyclists not obeying the rules in the division.

Some cycling offences and their fines, including court fees and victim surcharges, under the Highway Traffic Act:

Improper lighting: $35
Improper brakes: $110
No bell or defective bell: $110
Failing to wear a proper helmet: $85
Disobeying/failing to stop at a stop sign: $110
Failing to stop at a red light: $180
Careless riding: $325
Failing to yield to a pedestrian: $110
Riding the wrong way on one-way street: $110
Failing to move right for a passing vehicle: $110
Riding in or along a crosswalk: $110
Failing to stop or identify one's self: $110
Two people on a bike: $110

You can be sure that following recent issues and occurrences in Toronto between cyclists and motorists, this is just the beginning.

helmet would only apply to minors
What constititutes "careless riding" Is that the same as carefree riding?

A cop threatened my girlfriend with a ticket last night for "not being far enough to the right" after getting shot down with his lame and unoriginal pickup line. She told him he didn't know the law and she'd fight it in court. No ticket, he blasted away pouting.

3rd flat tire in a month.

*smacks face against wall*

I avoid glass like the plague and still get flat tires all the time. Seriously, I literally will brake, pick up the bike onto sidewalk, move past the glass and get back in the road if I see a little piece of broken glass - that paranoid, and I still get flats.

the bike gods do not like me, or i need a new bike

my back tire is bent yet again, grrrr! just got it fixed a few weeks ago. No idea how/why it got bent? although if it was bent once, could it just be 'weaker' and now just more prone to getting bent in the future?

Possibly. The boys at Scott (or should I say their Canadian distributor) are kissing my ass cause we've had some issues on deliveries all season & I told them we may possibly drop their bikes. So they'd be giving me a sick deal on that bike or it would be out of price range. The 2010 Reigns are available next week by the way Joe!

Did a 65.1 km ride last night with a convoy 8 other riders. We killed it! Got to the zoo and back in just under 3 hours (with a little break at the zoo) Great ride but I'm sore as hell today.

^ I was pretty much dialing the dudes number, then I saw it was listed in the "Frames" category so I hung up. Also, it was a size M which wouldn't work for me.

Spaboy, shoot me an email with your location, wouldn't mind seeing the Reign in person.

Do you have any broken spokes? Did you have broken spokes last time? If you're continually breaking spokes it might be time for a new wheel (or a rebuild- but I'm assuming it's not a fancy enough wheel to warrant a rebuild)

So I'm thinking of getting a mtn bike.
I was looking at the Specialized Epic Comp, but I found a 2007 model on craigslist.
here
Is the one on craigslist worth it? I have no idea about mtn bikes, so any help is appreciated.

So I'm learning how to ride a bike.
Yes, you read that correctly.

Where can a get a decent priced bike helmet? Is Mountain equipment co-op a good bet, or are they just going to gouge me? Also, is there anything specific I should be looking for in a bike helmet, other than the safety stuff....like is there something that makes it more comfortable?

I also need (read: want) knee pads and elbow pads as I'm terrified or hurting myself...where can I get those at a not awful price?

I'm not expecting a lot of help from this thread, but who knows.

You can get helmets at crappy tire as cheap as $15!

Made in Canada ones?

My internet research has found a Louis Garneau (who?) Oro Stinger MTB helmet that's @ MEC & made in Canada for $59. But my (very) little research is saying that I need a "road" or "street" helmet. $60 fucking dollars. I hope I like bicycling.

I think Duke's is closest to me though. I'll check it out before going to MEC I guess.

edit: and crappy tire website does confirm your info. i always forget i can get stuff there. i guess that can be my final solution if necessary.

Some reporter stopped me last weekend and asked what I thought about the idea of licensing cyclists in Toronto...

re licensing: I hope you told him to fuck off!

I'm surprised you found a helmet made in Canada! Dukes will be more expensive than MEC guaranteed!

Re: bike thief. I'm pretty sure that guy has been in my shop a few times. Seemed like an OK guy... how reliable is the source?

Thanks for the price tip on Duke's.

And the MEC site said it was Made in Canada, although that could just mean "packaged in Canada" I suppose. The rest were either made in China or Germany. Whon whon.
