It was an aluminum Kranked 24 spd FS MTB.

It wasn't the best bike, but still..

Time to search craigslist again. Yay

Can anyone recommend a good commuter/leisure bike for around $500 incl tax?
I'm not sure what I'd be looking for as this would be my first non bmx/mtb so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

for a commuter i suggest something used (500 would get you the shiz, 250 is what i normally bank). if it's a mountain bike frame, hybrid the wheels.

the reasons my commuter is used, is i won't blow a casket if it gets stolen, and it looks pretty crappy so it's not high on the the lift list.

Gasket

Yeah, I bought a new Trek 4300 a few years ago and it cost me around $500. Since then I have bought two used MTN bikes for $400 each. They are both infinitely better than the Trek.

Check pinkbike for used. Craigslist has a lot of junk.

So you wouldn't recommend a trek? A couple friends have treks and they ride great. What's bad about them?

Any specific brands I should or should not be looking for?

I'm looking for more of a relaxed riding position as the MTb I had was a little aggressive and caused sore back/neck.

You're in a tough price category to go new. There's a lot of base model crap with Suntour buildkits & Acera derailleurs which is ok but not ideal. Especially if your 170 pounds plus. If you go to the 550-600 range, you tend to see a significant increase in the quality of builds. Keep in mind bike shops have service plans too so you'll save some cash in the future with tune ups and such.

Craigslist should have some decent buys this time of year so I'd look for a nice buy if $400 is the budget. Nobody's buying bikes so hard nose haggling is a must!

The higher end Treks are fine, but they do make some crap at the low end. The main thing I was getting at is that there is a sharp depreciation to the value of a used bike. So the bike I paid $500 for new, which I really liked when it was all I had, is significantly lower end than what I ended up with by paying $400 for used.

So I went and picked up a bmx with 3 spoke rims(!) that needs some work done to it(crank rebuild, new brake lines, pads, tires, handle bars, grips, and seat).
I think I also want to find a vintage-ish road bike and get the single speed conversion done to it. I'm sure some of the fixie guys here can help me with that when I get a bike. I think I've seen fixed/non fixed rims so that's what I'll be looking for because I'd like to try fixed but have the option of non fixed for the massive hills up here in the burbs.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Someone should really organize a night ride, I'd totally be up for it.
