I used to write a bunch of tracker music in the 90s and then kinda let it slide for 10+ years, still noodling with synths but never writing anything. Finally decided to get off my ass and finish a song, shitty mixdown be damned.

Let me know if it's terrible, i still have time to delete it.

just to clear up where my mind is at tracking and .mod and screamtracker and general tracking software was 1993's answer to ableton. way before it's time.

it's like how the BBS was to the internet.

I never tracked but made mixtapes of .mod files. omg

Yeah, i started with ST3, then moved to IT when it came out. Always preferred Skaven to Purple Motion, though to be honest once i figured out people made techno with tracker software, my interest in demo music disappeared quicksmart. It was definitely WAY ahead of its time. Apparently Super Sharp Shooter was done in OctaMED; only found that out recently.

I notice i still write music like a tracker, even in Ableton. I load all my percussion into individual Sampler instances, i'll often do one-off echoes/delays just by repeating notes at different velocities, use sample offset (mapped to modwheel - ugh) to soften sounds, set all my instruments to mono etc. So much of today's music is absolutely drenched in effects, and although it sounds cool i just can't bring myself to produce that way. It just feels wrong. As a result i'll probably end up one of those old farts who everything they write it always ends up sounding dated.

yeah I was fond of purple motion, but that was the raging debate back then. my friends took to skaven as well.

wow they really butchered soundcloud with the new UI update..

it's impossible to do anything anymore.

can't create sets unless you upload more than one file. then it's just a weird situation.

can't make straight forward spotlight. don't know how to join groups anymore.

they just made it web 2.0 html5 out the ass to make it mainstream, and forgot about what made it successful.. being simple and straight forward.

uncool. so many bugs.. I left groups, joined some others, and now everything is "undefined" and blank spaces when I my check groups. bad move soundcloud.

yes.

The new Soundcloud sucks balls. I went to it so i could keep the background audio while i browsed other stuff, then prompty switched back when i couldn't find groups or my dashboard or pretty much anything else that i used to use on a regular basis. They gotta get their shit together.

I was reading an interview with KiNK the other day and was surprised to hear he started out using Buzz. I know some IDM guys use it, and a handful of trackers went pro when they switched to MIDI/synths, but not many recent "regular" musicians who do. There ya go.

Fun beatboxing Johnny.

Here's a little remix i put together over the last two Sundays; it's actually more of a cover version since i played everything in by ear. Some minimal deep house with a 90s Easter egg. Think i'm finally getting the hang of making cleaner mixes, which is what's stopped me from releasing anything i did since i picking up Ableton last year.
