Flying for the first time

You guys are crazy, 2 hours before a flight??

I have perfected the art of arrival and checking in. I check in about 45 minutes before the flight is scheduled to leave. If I am one of the last ones to check in my baggage is usually among the last ones to be put on the plane. In turn, it is one of the first ones to be taken off and put on the baggage carrousel. Flights rarely leave right on the scheduled time so the baggage has ample time to make it on the plane. My luggage was only lost once when I check in 30min before departure.

perfect, until you fuck it up.

Incorrect. One standard lighter is permitted in carry-on baggage.

they took mine away :( :p
btw hi agent smith! miss ya!

I usually arrive 2.5 - 3 hours early. Not because I think it's necessary, but shit always goes down and I hate stressing before a flight. If I need to lounge around an airport for 3 hours expensing drinks that's all good.

I used to go later, but unexpected traffic accidents, train stoppages, leaving my passport at home, and missing one of my flights later, I decided it just isn't worth it.

Check in for flights to the US cuts off 60 minutes before departure. They will allow special checkin after this time but will not guarantee that your baggage will make the flight. With the new post-security screening for US flights, it is virtually impossible to make your flight out of YYZ if you enter customs only 45 minutes before your flight.

Domestic check in is permitted up to 30 minutes before flight time.

yep. this is exactly why I go 3 hours early when flying to the states. fuck ups fuck ups fuck ups.

also, check that your flight is scheduled on time online BEFORE you leave home in the morning. I got to the gate last month only to find my flight had been delayed by 2 hours. stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'll reiterate what many have said. If you're flying into the US give yourself at least 2 hours, I'd suggest 2.5 if you've never been through an airport. I found this out the hard way (almost) last summer.

I was flying into Vegas, 8:30am morning flight. I got to Pearson with 1.75 hours to go. Iit was rammed because all the flights the previous afternoon had been cancelled because of weather. Even though I checked in the night before and printed off my info at those stupid automated kiosks (that have fixed nothing) I still had to wait in line for ever. I was then pulled into secondary screening by US customs, they made me wait for another 20mins. I just barely made my flight. It was super stressful.

This was before the new extra screening measures they have in place now.

Only 1 to the US. Domestic 2.

45min to 1 hour. It's fairly early to the airport won't be too busy.

The airport is crazy busy that early in the morning. I had a US flight a few weeks ago around that time. The line up for U.S. customs was huge. I'd show up 2 hours before to (as others mentioned) avoid fuck ups and to explore (since it's your first time).

Good tips so far.

For going through security- I usually take me belt, watch, etc off, and empty my pockets into my carry so I can go through the metal detector without setting anything off. Do this before you get to the security checkpoint. when you're at the front of the line, grab one plastic bin. Take your laptop out, put it into the bin, put your shoes on top, put your liquids(which are in a ziplock bag) into the bin and put the bin on the conveyor followed by your carry on. Have your boarding pass and passport in hand. Once you're through security go down the escalator then find some screens to see what gate your flight departs from. Follow the herds and you'll be fine.

I can never stay awake on flights(go figure) so I usually go shoes off, eye mask on, ear plugs in and neck pillow pillowing to really seal the deal. Make sure any liquids in your carry-ons meet the specs. One thing I like to do is carry a toothbrush for a pre-landing freshen up about half an hour before arrival. After landing, don't be a sucker like everyone else who stands up as soon as the plane parks, it'll be another 5 mins before people in the aisle start moving.

When you say liquids in a zip lock bag are you referring to shampoo, conditioner etc....? Moreover, does this mean I can only bring hotel sized shampoos and such? Not that I was thinking of packing that but I dont totally understand this liquid business.

Each liquid or gel container (including shampoo/conditioner) cannot exceed 3oz/100ml. Exceptions are made for "essentials" like contact solution or prescribed medication.

Yes you can only bring liquids in your carry-on through security that are in tiny travel size bottles. Once you get through security you are free to buy big bottles of stuff though like a bottle of water.

You can put as much liquid as you want (like bottles of booze) into your checked (goes in the hold) baggage.

Execeptions also for food/beverages for infants. I've been on 10 flights now with my 16 month old and the enforcement of the liquids rule when you have a kid with you has varied wildly in each of the 6 airports we've gone through security in (YYZ, LAX, SFO, Hilo, Lihue and Holguin). Some make you dump it, some test it, some just look at it and some didnt even mention it.

The one thing I've learned after years of flying is to expect something different in every airport and even on different days in the same airport.

and yeah, I think a few drinks will be order to relax the nerves.

Drinking is good but proceed with caution. The dehydration ila mentioned plus trying to drink what you might normally be capable of can lead to a nasty headache (or full on puking as it did for an acquaintance of mine). Keep the water handy.

2.5 hours for the States is the best option. They have lots of little stores and restos when you get past security that can keep you occupied if you have extra time. I spend most of my time in the bar and book store ;).

Problems happen. A friend of mine works for AC and travels a lot. He is often stopped for secondary security checks because he gets very nervous about flying. He's terrified and looks it (Full on sweats. Crazy). He almost missed a flight because of this so getting there early your first time is a good bet.

give yourself 3 hours. it's not worth.

your flight to Cabo (Mexico) will take 5 hours tops. I've been there. I find that's a really comfortable flight length. anything past 7 hours and I start to get fucking uncomfortable. I've been on flights of 17, 16, 15, 13, all of which are pretty horrible and dehydrating. plus connecting flights - blah!

on you first flight the taxi-ing, taking off, reaching altitude is so much fun. get a window seat. it cuts down the length of the flight! and it's fun in reverse on the way down!

Just watch a movie, read a book and you'll be there in no time. pack some snacks if you get hungry a lot. don't forget to ask a flight attendant for water, the AC can give you a sore throat and chapped lips

dude you are going to love cabo!

Gum. Don't forget to pack some. Some people, like myself, get build up pressure in the ears on take offs and landings. It can be painful if not alleviated quickly. So, unless you want to be smacking your gums and looking like you're giving the world's worst invisible blowjob, chewing gum is the answer.

Or you could just grab at your nose with your mouth closed and keep blowing.. repeatedly, but that just looks silly.

For sure, unless looking out the window winds up triggering an immobilizing vertigo you didn't know you'd get :) I find being able to look out the window really helps cut any potential feeling of claustrophobia, and it's easier to snooze against the bulkhead.

like others have said this only applies to liquids in your carry-on baggage. the containers must be 100ml or less and you'll need to put them all into one 1L ziplock bag. this limitation doesn't apply to liquids in your checked baggage.

on locking checked luggage: security reserves the right to inspect checked baggage before it goes on to the plane. if you have a lock on it they will break it. one thing you can do is buy those TSA locks that security can unlock, then re-secure after they've inspected

re boozing: you'll get more bang for your buck because the effects of alcohol are heightened by cabin pressurization

here are some website that you might want to check out:

(these people are like the city hall of toronto airports)
Greater Toronto Airports Authority - Check-in & Security

(these are the people who will be performing your freedom search)
Canadian Air Transport Security Authority - Your trip

have fun. commercial airline travel is kind of fun and kind of hellish in that it can bring out the worst in people. don't worry about the weird noises on takeoff and landing.

i don't know what the shit was going on a few weeks ago, but my boss and i waited 2hrs going through, they had to escort us onward as our flight was boarding.

i have a freakin' nexus card and could have avoided it all, but i couldn't ditch the boss.

I'm not big on flying. I feel like a sardine stuck in a tin can with a bunch of other coughing people, crying babies, and no where to go! The wahsroom is horrible, it smells like piss within a 6 foot radius before you even take off. I usually take gravol to sleep through most flights with my mp3 player. Oh and gum is a must!

Flying back in the '99/'00 was far more fun. Techie going through customs to the states? No problem. Just a carryon to make getting out of the airport nice and quick. These days it's hard to get anything through carry on luggage, making checked baggage and the extra half hour of airport time mandatory.
