firewood?

Anyone know places in the downtown or west end area that sell bags of firewood? (besides the chemical logs you can get at grocery stores).

Usually at the stores you can get a bag of firewood.

Also check lumber yards and / or garden centres.

I love using those boxed logs to start and then add the wood I have to the fire.

pretty much any hardware store and most corner stores sell firewood (expensive firewood) but unless you've got a truck or a place to store it that's the best you're gonna get.

Remember that guy who used to autodial and send messages to cell phones about delivery a cord of wood to your door

Also try craigslist in the "free" section I see firewood listed

I remember Fiesta Farms having firewood at their Christie Location just North of Bloor and south of Dupont.

I used my fireplace for the first time the other day and noticed something weird. The vent on the fireplace was open but for some reason the smoke would go into my place and not up the vent. If I cracked open my patio door (beside the fireplace), then the smoke would then go up the vent. Even when the fire was down to nothing, I thought it would be safe to close the patio door, but as soon as I did, I could see air blowing down on the embers and the fire would restart. Any ideas what would be causing this?

I might try lighting a piece of paper first and holding it up the chimney.
My parents smoke out their basement continuously and this seems to do the trick.

sounds like the chimney is clogged

can you see up past the vent?

there's a guy at my work who's a chimney sweep, I'll ask if I see him

If the smoke went up the vent when the patio door was open, it is not likely that the chimney is plugged. (Even so, if this is an old house and the first time that you have used the fireplace, you should have the chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary).

Sounds more like a problem with poor draft. Chimney - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia There are many potential causes and many potential solutions; do a search for "downdraft chimney" and you'll see.

My house has the same problem. We just keep a window in the room cracked open until the fire is totally out.

Cold air sits in your chimney and acts as a plug because cold air doesn't want to rise. This is why the smoke refuses to go up the chimney.

By opening the patio door you are helping to pressurize the room (letting air into the room) forcing the cold air up the chimney. Once the fire starts going and the air in the chimney is heated you can probably close the patio door and be fine.

You should also clean the chimney because this will help performance as well.
