ferry strike!

yea its kind of nuts but the ferry system is being used as a figure head for a much larger issue of the trend of privatization of public services. Since BC ferries is now a private corp rather then a public one the tax base of BC isnt sustaining the loss of money that's happening in the system right now so its needs to balance the books . this situation is happening in tonnes of other sectors of the economy as well (hence all the unions giving support and the talk of a general strike ( which will never happen)
It sucks about the isolation factor but really if its essential you get here you seill can. harbour links ferries are still running and you can always fly ( Air canada tix right now 44 bucks 1 way) which is only 8 bucks more then if you drove on) but still I know the arguments for the other side" yea sure AC can fly me there but I still dont have my car to get around. etc etc.
I'm all for the strike. workers have to defend thier rights
my 2 cents
I want to hear someones take who;s against the strike? see how they interprate the situation.
peace
Mike

I'm all for 'fight the power' and better salaries for the strugglahs - but when you're making $19+ an hour to bus tables and you strike because your overtime payment is being restructured, you need a reality check.

They really bungled this and will have made it harder for striking unions by their beligerence. I think the Supreme Court will punish accordingly.

Oh yea, Im on the island.

If the ferries stopped forever, society here would degenerate into a 'lord of the flies'-esque anarchy

Try flying into Van airport only to realize your tour date in Vic will be a no-go cuz of that strike. Not fun. Bastards!

yea and well there are many other ways to get to the island, if your in a jam you can always take harbour linx from vancouver to nanimo then bus it to vic, you jsut have to be willing to be flexible. ( not calling you(funknstyle) unflexible since you had no control over the issue but promoters need to realize that BC ferries is only one of many ways to get here.

whats fucked up now is that theres ligislation that's making the loggers to go back to work , previously dinding arbitration was only used in essential services.
odd situation going on here.

Now that the static is over.... I still don't want to make the 3 1/2 journey to vancouver. The island has all I need (except my gf)
