Fall of a Toronto mega club: Circa Bankrupt

If you want motown there are several options around town:

the InCrowd do a weekly (was at Czehoski, not sure now)
SplatterMonkey does things in random venues downtown west
and Parkdale Funk is also involved in a number of nights, including the recent SuperSoulFunkRevue with the Main Thing (that was too much fun!).

Info on all of these available on that fb place..

There's also a Motown Party at 751 Queen West. It's been going on for over a year. In fact, most of these newer Motown nights are riding the coat tails of the 751 party's success.

I think the cats who started Goin' Steady at the Boat in 2005 deserve a bit more credit but then again they do more of a rounded 50's/60's thing rather than straight Motown.

what i will say about circa is that it was a pretty fly club. a little shifty though (escalators?!?... get outta here *lol*) but regardless, had some banana nights there as well as missing some special nights and being right vexed as i knew they were gonna be something diff (Lupe & Kayne + Cut Copy par exemple)

We hear....

That owners of Pacha NYC have had meetings about taking over Circa, the bankrupt, closed club in Toronto which Peter Gatien opened in 2007.

source?

That would be interesting as I would think they would directly compete with the Guvernment for the same sound/crowd.

Pacha would have the clout to break the monopoly on booking agencies that the Guvernment has. But I still predict the space would fail. It's just too big.

+1
great idea but wrong space, having a Pacha in Toronto would be epic

I would love to see this happen....just for Guv competition possibilities. Went to Pacha in Argentina and had a great time!

Yeah me too. I absolutely refuse to step foot inside the Guv again. I'd love to have an alternative to check out people like Richie and Dubfire etc etc.

Having set foot in Pacha in NYC, I'd be quite surprised if this went through. Pacha NYC is a large 3 format club by even Toronto's standards, but nowhere near the size of Guv. I'd say Pacha's capacity taps out at 2000 people max. The main floor holds around 700-800 people.

I think anything trying to do something in that neighbourhood for electronic music is doomed. System had it's heyday. The 905er's are just too rowdy and disruptive to keep interest in the very fickle electronic music crowd. There's too much market saturation in the Entertainment District.

Then there's the launch of Abode by the old Boa people. I dunno.

You are right. Location had/has a lot to do with the long-run success of a handful of Toronto dance music clubs.

RPM/Guv't
Lizard Lounge
Catch-22
Limelight
Industry
System(s)
Element(s)
99 Sud(s)

I won't step anywhere near the old spots in the core, that in years past I couldn't wait to get to because they felt so far away from everything else.

With the influx of condo development and the (valid) hate for clubs in that area, I would think it would be much more likely to see a Krate & Barrel or Loblaw go in vs. another club, maybe even a mini mall.
