Extra Strength Sudafed = Ephedrine

today my girlfriend gave me an extra-strength sudafed to help get rid of a sinus headache i was suffering with

so, expecting a regular tylenol-like drug, i take it

and fucking fuck.

so 15 minutes later .. nothing's happened

then all of a sudden my headache's gone .. and i'm tripping out, getting all hyper, having body buzzes / surges ... then they started coming in small bursts, then less and less frequently

then i got my headache back

so i check the contents of this alleged EXTRA STRENGTH SUDAFED .. and lo and behold .. 100% pseudo-ephedrine

what - the - fuck

nothing else in it, just ephedrine

so yeah

i was surprised a non-prescription drug could be so powerful

i used to be addicted to sudafed in high school. powerful shit! i took 8 at once one time and ended up puking them up in the washroom(luckily i didn't do it in class).

pseudoephedrine is NOT ephedrine.

Chemically, one is the mirror image of the other, and that makes a huuuuge diffference. It has some of the effects, such as bronchodilation, but otherwise, completely different.

Similarly, Vick's vaporub has one of what's called an enantiomer of meth in it, but you could eat it until doomsday and not get high. Street meth is what's called a racemic mixture, meaning it contains equal quanitities of the mirror image enantiomrs.

p.s.: there are actually four stereoisomers (i.e. 2 pairs of enantiomers) of ephedrine.... "ephedra"--the herbal form-- is a mix of 4 'versions' of ephedrine....

Are you sure that the 'only' ingredient was pseudo-ephedrine? Last time I checked I'm sure there was acetamenophen (sp?) in the mixture too (for the headache). just asking...

whoa...just a had huge flashback to university.

stereoisomers and enantiomer are some of the only things i clearly understood in organic chem.

and some kinds of sudafed really do have psedeo-eph as their only ingredient.

does anyone know if its safe to take and also drink?
are there any ill effects to be wary of?

well that's the intended effect, but its also a stimulant.
in much the same way that caffeine can be used as a diuretic, but it too is a stimulant.

i'm just wondering how strong pseudo-eph really is, compared to, say, caffeine, and if there are any side effects worth knowing about if used in combination with other drugs such as alcohol.

I got a very similar effect from taking 2 tylenol cold. I was so fukked that I couldn't drive and almost crashed my car. I got to my friend's house and was so screwed, that I had trouble walking up the driveway, and was so spacy I couldn't follow what my friends were saying to me. I refuse to take those things anymore.

tylenol cold pills are GOD!!!!!!!! haha............i guess i can handle *over-the-counter drugs* than some of u! I was however really screwed the first time i took a couple of those pills and got ultimately WASTED! oye!
