suggestions? what to buy/not to buy? is it worth it? does it break down all the time...?

there must be a couple people out there that have an exercise bike or treadmill tucked away somewhere...

I have a skipping rope that's always in the shop so I never get to use it.

That's why I don't exercise.

I have a yoga mat, a pilates ball, a couple of hand weights, and a wheel-type thingy with handles... and i actually use these things! My parents have a treadmill that they never use. My uncle has a rowing machine (an erg?) that he uses everyday... It's all very personal, but my feeling is that you don't need to spend a lot of money on fancy equipment to get results. I have a friend who swears by lifting his own body weight.... he is 3% fat. cool, eh? He has this neat little routine he does everyday, with just his own body.

I have a nice mat, swiss ball & medicine ball for core stability (abs, obliques, & back) exercises. They never break, don't take up much room & don't cost alot of $.

I have a stepper, those mini weights you wrap around your wrists/arms/legs and a thighmaster. They all get regular use - especially the stepper, which I can just plunk in front of the TV ;) Nothing broken yet either.

hand weights are great for toning the arms etc.

i have an orbitrek at home and it's awesome ... quiet, has wheels so easy to move, keep it in the office and use it while staring out the window listening to music ... it's eliptical (sp? haha) which means it's non impact.

hmmm... see I have a back injury, so I can't use the gym right now, doesn't seem worth it. I do miss serious cardio and am not crazy about jogging. 1) It's cold outside 2) I am mostly free at night and worry about getting jumped in the dark

I want something I can listen to music or watch TV with... I hear so much about people buying equipment and not using it. I also worry that something I buy might break down and then I will have no clue how to fix it...

Where do you guys and gals buy this stuff from?

I suffer from chronic back injuries (repeated micro-tearing of disks in my lower back from "extreme sports" = much scar tissue that re-injures). I can't over-emphasize the importance of resting your back & slowly but steadily building core stability. Trust.
Long walks (burns calories & is easy on the back since it's low impact), a good exercise mat & a swiss ball are all you need at this point to get on the right track.

yoga is excellent for core strength, as is pilates.

however, if you are starting out, with an back injury, I would recommend taking classes as opposed to a video.......that way the instructor can help you out with modifications for each posture that won't hurt your back further.

yoga will make you wonderful. truuuuuuuust.

My wobble board and exercise ball (big, green inflatable one) are looking like objets d'art right now (and gathering a wee bit of dust).

personally, i'm move motivated to exercise if I have to leave my building.

here's another vote for yoga :)
