Equalization Payments – Harper’s Proposed Formula

In short:

Liberals made it so off-shore natural gas revenue isn’t counted in the formula.

Harper says he will change the formula so all natural gas revenue isn’t counted.

My opinion: Just another Conservative Big Business kick back.
You make the money, you pay the taxes.
Yeh Canada. Yeh Taxes, Yeh Social Programs.

What was most interesting of the whole CBC story last night, and when ever equalizations payments are talked about, is the fact no one ever mentioned how the territories get royally fucked on this one.
No provincial status = No Equalization Payments.

The Equalization payments were intended, at confederation, to provide a stable and consistent standard of life for all citizens, regardless of where they lived.

Ummm .... natural gas companies will continue to pay taxes to their provincial governments, just as always. The debate over the formula for equalization payments has nothing to do with actual tax revenues from "big business", but merely how these revenues are included in the calculation.
