Electrolyte Supplements

Hi All,

I'm researching electrolyte supplements. I need it for endurance.

On Sunday my team had an amazing talk from two physiotherapists who were on the medical team for the 1997, 2004, 2008 and London 2012 Olympics. The two types that they recommended were HEED and PERPETUEM. I checked popeye's and they don't carry them.

If you take any form of powder what kind do you take?

water and a touch of natural salt will give you all the electrolytes you need.

i generally just drink plain tap water on long runs.

Same here. I also take some nuts if it's going to be long enough that I will get hungry on the run. I like almonds or walnuts.

Stay away from those garbage electrolyte drinks and gels full of sugar. You will have all the glycogen you will need for the long run stored in your body, so you won't need to take in any more sugar.

I was actually dead serious about it. I also had half an avocado with it. I'm sure everyone's different but for me, bacon and avocado is the perfect pre-wo meal.

I'm expected to paddle 120km when I'm in Florida in a few weeks. Electrolytes powders are a must to keep you going. You also either take it with you while you paddle or your have it within an hour after you finish.

I guess i'll do my own research.. i thought more ppl on this forum would have taken some form as most ppl seem to be active.

I'm not talking about Gatoraide or any of those sports drinks. They're full of sugar and are horrible for you.

We are going for a week so 5 days. We have two paddling sessions a day.. Last year they paddled 105km and my coach told us he wants to do 120.. he's pushing us more this year bc both of his women teams are going to Nationals in Victoria in August... I heard from one person they survived the week by doing yoga every morning.. and another person told me they survived the week by popping advil lol "Pain is Temporary".. we do get thursday afternoon off though and Saturday afternoon there is a BBQ :) Can't wait!

try some different products while researching. the reality is though you can get added electrolytes from salt in a glass of water. nothing fancy required.

you'll discover lots of active people, even pros don't need or use added electrolytes in their system.

there was one product i use to use post-run called acclerade. it's has some protein as well. not a sugary as gatorade but still maybe a bit more than your looking for.

Natural Salt lacks potassium.

Half Salt > Any other salt for electrolyes.

Half Salt & Dextose is all you need.

My hubby and I use these fizz tabs (Hammer)

We often break them in half, or even a quarter, and throw it into the water bottle on the bike. Or you can bring it with you and add to a bottle of water if you feel you need it.

I only really take electorlytes when I plan on riding over 50km, or if it is really hot out and I'm already sweating!

Gels have their place, bottom of a large hill on the tail end of a ride? yes I'll take a couple cliff blocks please.. hehe but you need to chase it with a lot of water or your stomach will rot ou!
