ElBaradei calls on Israel to give up nukes

By Yossi Melman, Haaretz Correspondent

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, has called on Israel to relinquish its nuclear weapons as part of a general peace agreement in the Middle East.

In an interview with Haaretz, ElBaradei said Israel should follow the path taken by South Africa, the first and only country to part from its nuclear cache, when its weapons were destroyed under IAEA supervision in 1989.

In his first interview with the Israeli media, ElBaradei said he recommends that Israel join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

He said that in spite of Israel's policy of not acknowledging possession of nuclear weapons, "we operate under the assumption that Israel has nuclear arms. Israel has never denied this," he said from his office at Vienna headquarters of the UN organization.

The senior UN diplomat said the notion that Israel is safer today with nuclear weapons than it was 50 years ago is incorrect.

"Frankly, I am not happy with the status quo, because I see a lot of frustration in the Middle East due to Israel's sitting on nuclear weapons or nuclear weapons capability, while other parties in the Middle East are committed to the NPT," he said.

The Egyptian diplomat, who has headed the IAEA for seven years, suggested that Israel and its neighbors begin a dialogue for the eradication of weapons of mass destruction.

"My fear is that without such a dialogue, there will be continued incentive for the region's countries to develop weapons of mass destruction to match the Israeli arsenal, and as you know, there are already weapons of mass destruction in the region," he said. "Israel has nuclear, maybe biological and chemical [weapons]; others have biological weapons. It's not an incentive for security in the region."

PERFECT FIRST STEP

I think the is the very first step hat Israel should do. I also think that the world should properly credit it them for it. The analogoy of South Africa is beautiful not just in nuclear weapons but also in concept, Two states is the silliest concept in my opinion, the south Africa example is perfect.

If I was Isreal, I wouldnt, they are only surrounded on all sides by their historic enemys. Not to mention Mohamed ElBaradei was was born in Egypt, and a stint as the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

I'm not sure how Israel giving up one of their biggest deterrents go in helping solve their internal crisis with the Palestinians.

I believe that withut a peace plan including all of its neighbors Israel / Palestine cannot be solved. Withut a comprhensive agrement from Turkey to Yemmen right into Kyrgyzstan. Its not unrealistic to expect Israel to lead, hell Pakistan has already agreed to more nuclear concessions. I think its reasonable that India has nukes simply because of China, which provides a balance of power. Africa does not have nuclear weapons, South America is free of them, If the Middle East were free of them peace would be far more likely. India is unfortunate but Pakistan is at least realistic, Israel shuld lead the effort in my opinion.

Peace needs to occur in a greater context than just this one issue, personally I think that if peace is decl
ared all around, arsenols of stuid weapons handed over it will become trivial to solve Israel Palestine. If Iran, Israel and Pakistan all make a simple significant move to aknowledge and account arsenols it would be a very important first step. russia, The Brits, France and US have lied abut key elements but most of what is said to exists is verified. Evidently China stashes aren't o muh of a mystery either.

If the whole region finds a measure of peace withut anhilating the tiny spec that is Israel, everything will role into line for Palestine. But as it stands I think Israel has the ability to take the first step. Letting go of the Bombs, In exchage for Iran giving up its upcoming one, and all of its advance chemical and biological, Pakistan giving up all of its in exchang a french, american british comman controls a stabalazing arsenol in case of any attack of Pakistan by nuclear or biological attack.

In all honesty I think its reasonable to suggest that the UN needs to compltely monitor and needs to know of all nuclear weapons.

I second ChrisD's statement... It is israel's only wild card, and there is no way in hell they are going to destroy them... if they have them. IMO it is a completely unrealistic request (seeing as who made it).
