Editing the Boot Screen?

Rocky

I used a windoes98 boot disk to run fdisk and to format my drive, then I installed winxp pro. now, the boot screen shows winxp and windows.

How do i get rid of the windows option since i never did install 98? Do I edit the boot.ini file? I did a search but couldn't find it.

cool. i did a search for the boot.ini file, but nothing came up. i even enbled searching hidden files and folders. :confused:

[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

I don't wanna fuck shit up...so, do i just delete the C:\="Microsoft Windows"?

Yeah, that line sounds like the 98 entry.

When the machine boots, it prompts you to load Windows XP or Windows 98, right?

For example, my XP machine has the exact same boot.ini minus the C:\Windows line.

You can also use that menu screen I pointed you to to edit it.

ok...i tried it on don's PC first, just in case. i wouldn't want to screw up my PC :p

i actually used the menus that you posted to find the boot.ini file.

thanks, i'm god...i can do a few more things that i wanted to do running msconfig.

i want to disable the auto update feature and the windows messenger thing (not the one labelled messenger under "services" - i already disabled that one). what are they called in the local services menu?
