ok, i was walking back from the library at 4am, and i passed this relatively large puddle. there were two duck bodies not moving with no heads.

it took me a while to realize the heads were there, just underwater. then it took me a while to realize that they weren't moving at all.

Now. I'm sure they weren't dead. Two of them in the exact same position, chillin in the water....whatever.

So they were asleep??

How the fuck do ducks sleep with their heads under the water???

WHATS GOING ON HERE???

See, that's what i thought at first. then i thought maybe they were those fake wood ones. But then i thought, why would someone carve out two and put them in a random puddle? Woudln't you at least put them in a pond? And why would they have no heads?

Have you guys ever seen two ducks fight? It's the most vicious thing I've ever witnessed. They go for the neck and make SO much noise.

they sleep with their heads tucked tight under their wing so it would look like they were in the water.
Trust me Tina, I grew up right by U of W and had many hanging out in the yard.
Your little friends were just fine.
They just should have been at Columbia Lake or the Beechwood duck pond with their buddies.

Oh yah. I totally didn't think about that.

Apparently, studies have been done, and when ducks sleep in a line, the ones on the outer edge sleep with one eye open 150% more than do the middle ones.

Accordingly, neurological tests show that their one half of the brain is indeed alseep, while the other side awake.

Also, ducks often sleep on one foot.

Don't know if this question belongs here, but I'll ask anyway:

When your foot falls asleep during the day, does it stay awake all night?

maybe they saw something really cool down there, like money or a shinning object (those things aways distract me).

i almost hit a duck on my way to work this morning ... the fukkers took off from the side of the road and instead of going up they kinda went sideways. it was like watching that 3D imax movie with the geese where they fly right beside you.

whoosh ... almost had myself something to bring home for dinner.

Ducks cant go 'up'.

erm... very few, if any, birds can actually go 'up' without going a bit sideways.

Thrust (sideways) + Elevation (up) = Flight.

That's the scientific explanation for it anyways.
for more information on this and other related topics, see 'fly away home'... until then... i hate cats.
