seriously. how can you not dance? I can see some people thinking it's too slow cause they don't know what beat to dance to. it's like the opposite of when people complained dnb was too fast to dance to

Easy! You can dance it "dub" or you can dance it "step" :D (I actually mean that.)

And stop labeling every piece of music that surfaces. Categorization is such a blemish on what I think should be an embracing of eclecticism.

THIS!!!!
It either works for your feet/ears, or it doesn't.
(Personally I like it from time to time as long as the bass does it justice and the MC, if there is one isn't obnoxious - I remember a guy at a gig at Crosstown a few years back so annoying and untalented I eventually had to leave because he just would not shut up.)

I was playing dubstep records 6-7 years ago and their wasnt anybody really feeling them other than the other UKG guys in this city.

Thou I will say the dubstep sceen in this city has well surpassed the
Toronto UKG scene even at its peak. (2001-2003). It was an interesting time to be a DJ of UK urban music around that time. 2000-2003 the music was changing. I made the mistake of not going forward and push new music.

the Proto Dubstep/Grime/8bar stuff that was coming out at the time just wasnt really working @ our residency @ Nasa and we wanted to make the vibe more Positive so the djs kinda shuned it thinking it would never work here.

Boy we were wrong.

People went mental over that lame shit??

Nothing happened for the first 3 minutes, it was like one long ambient intro.

Fucking boring.

It's a good remix by a talented producer. I love Scuba's work.

Anyway, enough bollocking around. This Silkie tune is right up my alley. Nice Aaliyah sample.

In 2006 I was having a very long discussion about music with Roland, and after finding that we had tons of favourite tastes and styles in common, we severely differed in opinion on "dubstep:" I liked it, but he wasn't a fan. Back then it was mostly half-step though, so I'm guessing he's adopted some of the bass-genres that span beyond dnb, breaks, hiphop, and dub. :)

Yeah, he was right across the board and the dubstep he dropped was good quality gear. He's a DJ i need to get out and see more.

4/4 is a time signature that refers to the number of beats in a bar, not whether or not the bass drum hits on or off those beats. 99.9999999999999 % of all dance music is in 4/4. Jungle and Drum and Bass is 4/4 music.

I think its kind of funny to read how hard the dubstep fans defend dubstep. Just because someone has a different opinion on it than you doesn't mean you have to attack. You act as if they’re going to stop hosting jams because some ppl don't like dubstep.
Honestly I was into it for a while. Went to events, chilled in the subfm chatroom and even got to know some dubstep dj's and producers. I found that I could dance to some of it but some of it was so slow and depressing that you just stand there. Or those weird sounds that you have no idea whats going on and you just stand there or at least I did. The thing that did it for me was this "brostep" bullshit. Also the fact that at every jam you hear the same tracks over and over again by sorry to say it most of the local guys. I actually walked out of the Joe Nice show when I herd that ganga track being overplayed yet again.
I also didn't like the attitude of the ppl who were at the events. I've been to a lot of different jams in the city and I have never witnessed that type of attitude before. The only time that I've actually had people acknowledge my existence or be nice to me was when I rolled into a jam with a jungle mc. Seems like you have to know a crew in order to meet anyone at these event's or they don't even acknowledge you. I have gone to other awesome event's in the city alone and met so many nice, friendly, easy going people. What's up with the attitude honestly?

it's that 3/4 waltz-step that usually screws me up.

There are totally 3/4 and 5/4 and 6/4 and other strange time signature electronic tracks (including flubstep), but they truly aren't the norm.

I find its the exact opposite for me at the shows.

I found the first half of Joe Nice's set to be boring and drab, but the second half was quite good actually, and if you had stuck around, SPYNE would have torn you a new hole with his set.

the people in the scene are above and beyond far better than the junglist mentality, and aggression that made jungle parties awful to attend.

i find that people are quite friendly, the ones i want to talk to anyway, and alot of the DJ's are actually very cool, chill and approachable.

to name a few Sidenote, Subhuman, Ill Gates, Spne, AKG, Link, XI aka Egyptrixx are all very cool, and generally play very decent unique sets and not alot of anthems.

its interesting to hear all these stories of shitty experiences that people are having, when i cannot remember a show i didnt like ASIDE from the RUSKO show i walked out on @ ModClub, because Rusko's set was fucking awful, and the person before him killed my desire to party with a truly HORRIBLE set. not debstep, something i dont even know how to describe.

maybe its just not for you, or maybe you went to a bad generic night that wasnt up to par.

but i have only been disappointed 1 - 2 times in the last 2 years going out.

and i am picky.

This is where I was at a while back, been growing on me steady though. Here's a nice and thorough mix from Jus Wan on the Hotflush (best dubstep label in the world?) Podcast:

http://www.hotflushrecordings.com/podcast/hotflushpodcast_05_juswan.mp3

this is very chill almost downtempo/minimal compared to what i would consider the Dubstep that is played in this city.

i think its picking up a bit though around the 22 min mark.

there is alot more Glitch and deep bass heavy sounds from what i hear when i am out and partying.

i still really like it though, reminds me a little of Rentboy's style in his Dub Sets.
