im not going to go into details, but i recieved a pretty fucking bad review on my flyers today...

and im looking for an HONEST opinion... (please)..

what do you think of these.. as flyers for a primarily techno + other genres party..

ps. these are all the flyers i have done in succession from first (ever) to most recent...

they all attempt to incorporate our logo into some trippy scene (obviously)..

the whole idea of the logo.. is that its just a line travelling through space.. hence the name negative space

Looks OK...

But my Honest Opinion is I don't like any of them really, due to the face they all look like Stolen Images and the Photoshop or Illustrator skills are lacking.

Just being honest.

i think the 3rd is the best and the first is the worst.
i don't get the wierd shadow on the left side of the last one but i still like it.
i like the theme, but i'm partial to that kind of image.

Honest opinion? I personally think the fonts make them look amateurish. I don't like them. What about only image fronts with all the info on the back?

BBB.

You asked, I was honest. Obligation fulfilled.

#3 and #5 do a great job of incorporating the logo into the image without it being too obvious, or making it look like it was just pasted on top, such as in #1 & #4, #2 as well but it has a bit of work done on it...

but pr0n is right..bad photoshopping skills.

the left hand side of #4 makes my eyes sad...the black paintbrush tool is sooo obvious and the transition in the blue sky isnt smooth enough, it looks cut off.

and our friend black paintbrush tool makes anappearance agian in #5 on the left, to coverup/erase what...another lightnign bolt?
it should be blended more into the background, and do not juts use the colour black if this is your nethod or removing unwanted stuff from an image, use the colour picker and get the darkness in the sky provided by the image.

i would have used smudge to remove the lightning bolt, then covered it on a layer with a dark colour chosen from the sky, a bit transparent, cause i would use about 3 different shades of the dark sky, then play with noise so that it will resemble the grainyness of the original picture.

so why wont youu tell us what the bad review was and who it was from???(employer, teacher, what??)

^^^ yes indeed, i didnt notice any of those things because i was using an old ass moniter with totally fucked gamma correction... event the gamma correction config. couldnt fix it..

so, those mistakes are more a product of the tools i was working with than lack of attention or knowledge on my part.. (ie. you could not even see them on my computer

fortunately you could not see them in the final print because the printer prints fairly dark as well..

regardless, i have since picked up a new moniter.. so that problem should not come up again..

i dont know anything about how to make/design flyers, but..i like the stone henge one the best. however, they all look like anyone coulda made them. like there was no real skill required. something along the lines of a picture with the logo pasted on top....

no.. im not doing these flyers for an employer or school..

i basically just decided that it would be better to make my own flyers and figure things out as i went than pay all kinds of $$$ to get someone else to do them, and not learn anything..

personally i think a different font would maybe be more effective.
and i don't really find that the images and type relate to each other...like the logo is kinda stuck on top???
but they are not bad...
than again, i am not an expert.

Honest opinion?

Yes, I think that the first 2 aren't so good...but I really, really like the last one.

the font for the negative space logo needs to be changed...don't like it at all. You could possibly use the same font as on the bottom from for the whole thing (front & back). I definitely see a progression in the flyers...you are getting better. I like the whole "darkness" to the flyers...sets a tone for what you may find at the party.

I have to vouch for you though...they don't look so "manufactured" in print.

But, how much of them can you really change without going against the whole image you guys are trying to project? I think you told me once that you want people to come to your parties for the DJ's/music/vibe...not because you have an extremely eye-catching flyer. Ritchie Hawtin said something along those lines, correct? ;)

Oh...if you want to make your space pictures look more realistic, you could put some stars in the background...when was the last time you looked up into the night sky and didn't see at least a few twinkling lights! (when you were outside of hamilton at least)
For the longest time I couldn't pinpoint what made the images look unrealistic, and that might be it.

Just trying to help ya :D

I don't mind the 3rd and the 5th
but really, they lack creativity
They are amazing images that maybe should go behind the info on the inside/back of the flyer... also the font reminds me of the post nintendo, but pre-super nintendo look, hehe

back to the drawing board i guess?

spiff up the text, you could maybe try using some opposing colors, throw in some cool design on the border or someshit just to add more substance rather than a line going around the picture. Some faded background images or lines or whatever are always a safe bet. But honestly All of them are decent. I like how you incorporated that design into each pic. (god and nasa lol:)) Anwyways if it's just a small techno party who cares it looks good I mean you won't win any prizes but the colors and images seem to be enough to catch the eye and stir up recognition in people who have seen the logo or been to a party. A lot of times less is more but in this situation I would say toss in a little more just don't go too nuts. All in all Fuckin AOK.

Yah!.. haha.. sometime you get so caught up in things that you forget the original purpose behind what you wanted to do..

it was an article i read in klublife w Ritchie Hawtin & Aquaviva.. and they were saying how they thought toronto had the worst party scene in the world because it was so

"ravygravy"

with 10000 colour glossy flyers and fire-breathers (obvious attacks on Liquid Adreniline and Hullabaloo..)

and they wished the scene would get back to simple black and white flyers and dark beats..

hence the idea for the name - negative space - the sound and the flyer concept...

wow.. how quickly you forget, what were then, perspetive changing words...

*sigh*

all of a sudden I feel alot better..:D

cheaper flyer = better parties

^^^ right!

AND, the more money you spend on flyers, the less you have to spend on decorations, DJ's, giveaways, etc.... things that can enhance the vibe of your party.

Bottom Line: Keep the flyer concept, but brush up on your adobe illustrator skills.
