didn't doug ford essentially reduce yearly inspections to 6 at places like this ?
Mike Harris is on the chartwell board - plus opening up private action here was a Team Blue play.

So Ford was taking care of his buddies who told him "dont worry - we got this! Who needs inspections??"

Yikes:

"The critical point of tension in nursing care occurs between ‘care for profit’ and ‘care for needs’. Since 2010, seven of the largest for profit long-term care chains have received nearly $4.9-billion in direct cash transfers from the Ontario government (Table 1). The trouble is that without any financial accountability, that public money might be going to the luxury needs of shareholders and executives instead of serving the needs of residents.

Recent international research on the provision of long-term care suggests Ontario has the worst financial accountability and transparency when compared to Scandinavia, England and California. Financial improprieties in the care home sector are systemic in highly privatized systems. Whether private ‘family-run’ homes or multinational firms, there is no legitimate reason why with sums of public subsidy this huge, executive salaries and company profit margins are not available to the public.
....
The Conservative Party made three fundamental changes to nursing homes between 1997 and 2002. The first was competitive bidding procurement through the Community Care Access Centres, which favoured for-profit homes. The second was the repeal of a legislated care standard and staffing ratios. Third, capital funding was allocated to LTC operators but mostly to the firms that gave generous campaign donations. As Robert MacDermid has shown, between 1995 and 1999, the Conservative Party banked $336,545.30 from the long-term care lobby, representing between 12 and 41 per cent of yearly donations. Roughly 10,000 of 14,000 beds allocated during this time went to the private sector"

But there's blame to go around here - NDP kicked off some shit changes here even before the cons did their con job - liberals didn't fuck with what the cons did and entrenched it.

The mood out there is that this pandemic is pretty much over. Is it?
Nope. They’re assuming that because there hasn’t been a spike from Trinity-Bellwoods (yet) and the numbers keep going down. This may are may not be attributable to the warmer weather.

WHO also just did a partial backpedal on the a-symptomatic spread, saying it might not be as prolific as originally thought.

I’m no expert but everyone I’m close to is still erring on the side of caution. Still using a mask and gloves in stores and social distancing. Still haven’t had a proper gathering of family or friends. ...but the gardening helps with the stress!

A few states are almost out of ICU beds.

Brazil is not reporting numbers and filling out giant mass graves. mexico is falling into disaster too.

It's warm in Brazil and Mexico too - in case people were wondering.

We're looking at a 1918 double hump with the bigger one to come IMO

Went to Squareboy on Danforth to grab souvlaki et al, and man the traffic and ppl everywhere at 1pm was full on rush hour. Nobody's taking TTC, everyone's driving, walking, riding their bikes (full family's!)

Gonna be a bad time in the city if the curve gets out of control...
