I just had one of the best weekends of my life. Danny Howells, Saeed and Palash, Nick Warren, and Josh Wink. Anyhow, Connected was one of the best large scale events I have ever been to, if not the best. Here's a little review.
Venue: The CEPSUM at the University of Montreal. Basically, it was a hockey arena with stands on one side only. The sound was incredibe. There were speakers hanging from all over. The lighting was intense, with lasers and pyros creating diverse shapes and forms. The party was so well organized. The security was great, there was space to dance, there was water everywhere, as a matter of fact there were people going arounf selling boxes of water bottles. Great idea! They even sold RED BULL. It was an unbelievable sight being in the stands and looking down at the sea of people going off. There were two masive screens hanging from the rafters showing the DJ that was spinning.
Crowd: The crowd was great for the most part. The parties in Montreal attract an older crowd because of the 18+ thing, but they never ever check ID. I'd say the average age was 22-24. The women in Montreal are the best dressed, most stunning hotties in the world.
Sets:
11pm-3am - Saeed & Palash
A great set by these two bad boys. They mucked up on a few mixes, but everything else was smooth as silk. Great pumpin' tribal tech funk and stompin' prog house. Looking forward to seeing these guys at Breathe in a few weeks.
3am-5am - Nick Warren
I've heard Nick Warren do much better before. His track selection was inconsistent, and his mixing was shady at times. A bit of a disappointment, no doubt. He was supposed to play from 2-5am, but he went on just before 3am. Not sure why. He did drop "Intensify" and WOW's remix of "Horizons".
5am-7am - Josh Wink
Josh Wink was a pleasant surprise. His blend of dark, haunting tech house and techno went down very well. The best mixer that I saw at Connected. Very tight! He was using an FX pad as well, and played with it frequently.
Overall, a great party. We left just before Josh Wink's set was over. I would have liked to have seen John Acquaviva, but he wasn't due to hit the decks until 8:30am, and my body was not taking any more abuse. Met up with huggs946, who took us to get tickets and let us chill at his pad before and after the party. Ian, it was great meeting you and your friends. We had a wicked time. Can't wait to you come out to Toronto.
What else can I say. Montreal is a cutting edge, wicked world class city, better then Toronto in some ways IMO. They take their dance music/club culture very seriously, and hype venues are made available to promoters(unlike Toronto). I can't wait to go back.
